We too just put our 11 year old Golden Retriever, Lucy, to sleep this morning. Every time I do this, I find out how much of a tough he-man I’m NOT.

For me, to answer the question do our pets go to heaven, I ask back the question, why wouldn’t they be in heaven? The truth is, we really don’t know for sure. We are taught and should believe heaven is a place of unimaginable love, happiness, joy, and peace. So, why would God hold back the love of our precious pets from us for eternity?

Sometimes, I think our pets (for our family, it’s dogs) are like God. They don’t force themselves on us, but are always there ready to greet us, ready to comfort us, ready to play, always there to give us unconditional love. It’s up to us to accept it or turn away from it. How often, don’t we turn away from the love they want to give us? How often don’t’ we walk by and hardly notice them? And, don’t we do the same to God all the time? But, regardless of our past, we only have to reach out, and they, like God, cannot wait to shower us with love! I believe God gave us our pet companions as one small way to catch a glimpse of heaven and to allow us to ponder and reflect on His love and mercy towards us.

I will always hope in confidence that our precious Lucy will be awaiting us in heaven. It’s up to me to make sure I follow the teachings of the Catholic Church, to pray, receive the sacraments, increase in holiness, decrease in selfishness, live a life of love, charity and forgiveness, so I can one day rely on God’s mercy to get me to heaven and bring my family and as many others with me as I can!!

I am sorry for your loss. 😦

Hi everyone,
I just need to talk to someone besides my family who just breaks down crying when I even mention it. The night before last our one eyed Chihuahua had a stroke and last night had to be put down . he was the sweetest dog and we have had him since I was 14 (I am now 26) and I just am so torn up. I just can’t imagine never seeing him again and seeing his little happy face when I walk through the door. He was an old guy but just a few days ago he was springing around wanting to play and be picked up and then just suddenly he is gone. The only thing I can think is I hope to see him in heaven one day. I know what the church says about animals but I just …idk I have to think I’ll see him again one day or I just lose it more than I already am. St Francis of Assisi pray for me and my family.
A very wise, and orthodox priest, once shared with me these thoughts when I lost my beloved Shaw’s Roddy MacDuff (the Wonder Scottie). He said, “You know, I absolutely accept the Church’s teachings on the material souls of animals. I can’t help but wonder, however, if one has a deep love of stewardship towards animals that you have if that might not be rewarded as heaven surrounding you with the pets you cared for so well during your earthly life? However, know that heaven means fulfillment, and we can trust God to give us that fulfillment in the best way possible”.

I lost another one after Roddy (Shaw’s William Wallace MacDuff - or Duffy the Wonder Scottie). Today I have Shaw’s Rob Roy MacDuff - or Robbie the Rescue Scottie. I am so blessed to be able to help and steward these animals. I trust God.

Honey, I am so sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. Nelson looks like a lovely little gentleman. Remember he was one of the very lucky few, who had a wonderful life and left the world knowing he was loved and treasured. That’s a wonderful gift you gave him: how many dogs (or people come to that) in the world get to live and die that way?

He’ll always be in your heart and one day, you’ll be able to celebrate everything he taught you by making another dog’s life amazing too. I’ve owned 3 dogs who have sadly passed away now and each one somehow managed to ‘hang on’ for me through old age and infirmity until something great was just around the corner. That ‘something great’ was another dog in need of a home.

The last little soul I took in is a breed renowned for being aggressive towards strangers and very loyal to its owner. I was offered him out of the blue; took him in as a foster; handed him over to his new ownerd in floods of tears and then … 10 weeks later he came back to me because he hadn’t been accepted by one of their dogs and he jumped in my car and settled without a backward glance. He’s wormed his way into my heart and I could not contemplate letting him go, but I was also in my mid-30s and very single and this dog was like a living (and these guys have been known to live into their 20s) walking chastity belt 😃

But God moves in mysetrious ways…one day when I was working with him to keep his brain engaged while we were standing around, my now husband looked at me and my little dog and liked what he saw. We’re married now, with 8 dogs between us 👍 I have a wonderful husband and my little dog struts round ‘his’ harem of lab and spaniel bitches!
