Who cares which one he was thinking of when he chose the name. WE HAVE A NEW POPE! WE HAVE A NEW POPE! WE HAVE A NEW POPE! :extrahappy::extrahappy:
Because having a Jesuit as Pope is historical big news and long over due. I am so excited.

One thing is clear. This Pope will be entirely unable to breathe with both lungs.

Habemus Papam! Viva il Papa!

He may be named after St. Francis Xavier, but no doubt his name alludes also to St. Francis of Assisi, who was told by the Lord, “Rebuild my Church.”

I read he speaks Spanish, Italian and German fluently. Does Pope Francis speak English?

There is also St Francis Borgia,(every family has to have a white sheep) the second Father General of the Society of Jesus. He was also one of the leaders at the Battle of Lepanto. His history is well worth studying.

LOL - I’m glad you said that, because I was thinking it, but didn’t want to make a crass joke on the first day of his papacy! 😃

But seriously, without knowing anything about him other than the photos that have been shown so far, he looks like a very nice man - and reminds me (in a good way) of Pope John Paul the First - is anyone else here old enough to remember when our gentle “smiling Pope” first came to the balcony?

You will love a Jesuit priest as pope. They are caring, fun loving, forgiving. Fr. Mulcahy from MASH was a Jesuit.

Pope Francis seems to be better than your average Jesuit. Thank God. Apologies to anyone here with Jesuit links but they have a bit of a reputation for thinking themselves intellectually superior to the rest of us.

I saw the Vatican spokesman on CNN today when he was asked why the Pope had chosen the name Francis. He talked a lot about St. Francis of Assisi, but I thought he said the Pope would tell us tomorrow his reasons for choosing that name. I was surprised he didn’t mention St. Francis Xavier but maybe St. Francis of Assisi was the first name to spring to mind. St. Francis Xavier was my sister’s favourite - she did the Novena of Grace every year. He brought the faith to India and, according to Wikipedia, his ambition was to evangelise China. I see China as the Church’s last big frontier. We Europeans and Americans have had plenty of opportunity to hear the Word of God and now it’s up to us to live the faith or turn our backs on it. It’s China’s turn to hear the Truth.

My initial thoughts are that this pope will bring new meaning. In a time we need leadership, I hope the holy spirit will work through him.

We Russian Greek Catholics have been in the pastoral care of Jesuits for much of our history, including my parish. Fr. Mark Ciccone, SJ, our former pastor who was with us for Prodigal Son Sunday 2013 a couple of weeks ago is amongst the SJs who have served us over the years.

I have heard the Russian Greek Catholic Church described as “a fiction invented by the Jesuits” - by a Ruthenian priest.

Not very charitable of the priest to say that. The Russian Catholic Church is a true Catholic Church just as the Ruthenian is.
