We have a Pope!

Pope Francis seems to be better than your average Jesuit. Thank God. Apologies to anyone here with Jesuit links but they have a bit of a reputation for thinking themselves intellectually superior to the rest of us.

I saw the Vatican spokesman on CNN today when he was asked why the Pope had chosen the name Francis. He talked a lot about St. Francis of Assisi, but I thought he said the Pope would tell us tomorrow his reasons for choosing that name. I was surprised he didn’t mention St. Francis Xavier but maybe St. Francis of Assisi was the first name to spring to mind. St. Francis Xavier was my sister’s favourite - she did the Novena of Grace every year. He brought the faith to India and, according to Wikipedia, his ambition was to evangelise China. I see China as the Church’s last big frontier. We Europeans and Americans have had plenty of opportunity to hear the Word of God and now it’s up to us to live the faith or turn our backs on it. It’s China’s turn to hear the Truth.
Jesuit don’t think of themselves has intellectually superior, but they are far more educated than most of us; however, they live a very humble existence and go on to educate others. Most Jesuit high school give a great deal of financial aid for those who cannot afford a private education.

I’m sure you are right and the reputation is undeserved. Pope Francis certainly appears to fit your description of Jesuits. I couldn’t be happier with our new Pope.

I study in a Jesuit College and I do get financial aid because I cannot afford private education 😉

LOL - I’m glad you said that, because I was thinking it, but didn’t want to make a crass joke on the first day of his papacy! 😃

But seriously, without knowing anything about him other than the photos that have been shown so far, he looks like a very nice man - and reminds me (in a good way) of Pope John Paul the First - is anyone else here old enough to remember when our gentle “smiling Pope” first came to the balcony?
I am. 😃

Not very charitable of the priest to say that. The Russian Catholic Church is a true Catholic Church just as the Ruthenian is.
It was partially in jest, but I think also intended to reflect some of the history and origin of the Russian sui iuris church, particularly on the immense influence the Jesuits have had. This as opposed to churches like the Melkite, Ukrainian, or Ruthenian churches, which all entered into union in a different way.

Congratulations to all in the Roman communion on the election of your new Pope, Pope Francis. From what little I have read of the news coverage (I don’t get cable anymore, so I can’t watch EWTN like I used to), he seems like a very humble man. May God bless him and may he continue the good work of his predecessor.

But I do wish the media would stop referring to him as a non-European or Latin American Pope, as though the cardinals elected Evo Morales to be Pope or something. Sure, he was born in Argentina (lots of different people are, and roughly 60% of Argentina’s total population is said to have some Italian heritage, of whom 1.5 million still speak the language), but his parents were from Piedmont, and Bergoglio is not exactly a Mapuche or even a Spanish name. It seems like the media is so anxious to have the Pope of Rome not be a white guy, and since they didn’t get their choice in Cardinal Turkson, they’re doing what they can to play up the “Latin American” roots of the new Pope (you know, the ones he doesn’t have).

I think CNN is busily trumpeting Romes first “non-european” pope… Completely unaware that we’ve had african popes. Oh well

Haven’t you heard yet that the Venezuelans are claiming that Chavez personally persuaded the Holy Spirit to get us a Latin American pope?

Yep. The facts and the background don’t matter. The media (especially the American variety) will do whatever plays to the audience. Always has, always will. And this certainly does play to the American audience. 🤷

And I’m sure you noticed that his Italian (la lingua Italianna, not dialect) was unaccented. Given age, family, etc, I’d venture to guess Italian was his first language. 🤷

I am extremely happy to see Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio becoming the new Holy Father.

At the same time, I am a strong supporter of Opus Dei.

What can we expect in terms of the new Pope - Opus Dei relations? Should we be minful of the historic tensions between the Jesuits and The Work?

My Italian friend from Argentina says that all the Italians moved to Argentina when all the Armenians moved to Italy.

It does seem odd that everyone is calling him “The first Hispanic Pope” and such things. He may be culturally Argentinian but he is ethnically Italian.

Still, I’m quite sure that he can’t be called “European” by an stretch of the imagination and am sure that the joy felt in South America is justified.

I just wanted to say to all of the Catholics here, congratulations on your new pope.
👍

Not very charitable of the priest to say that. The Russian Catholic Church is a true Catholic Church just as the Ruthenian is.
In a sense, it is true enough… the Russian Greek Catholic Church has had no hierarchy of its own since the 1920’s. Keep in mind that one of the three definitions for “church” is a group of faithful under a single bishop… and in that sense, the Russian GCC is not a church.

The actual definition as a church wasn’t the Jesuits, though… it was Pope John Paul the Great.

Perhaps His Holiness Francis will cure that.

WetCatechumen;10483232:
I have heard the Russian Greek Catholic Church described as “a fiction invented by the Jesuits” - by a Ruthenian priest.
.
Not very charitable towards the Jesuits either. 🤷 I have recently heard some outrageous untruths about our Church from a retired Ruthenian priest. It’s quite unattractive to say the least when a priest insults the clergy, including the Bishop, and faithful of fellow Eastern Catholics speaking falsely about them. :sad_yes:

I keep hearing that Pope Francis is bi-ritual and multi-ritual, but no one has been able to tell me when he was granted those faculties and for which rite.

Also, does anyone know of any quotes of his or snippets from his writings that discuss Eastern Christianity or his involvement with Eastern Christian Communities during his pontificate in Argentina?
