the faculty for bishops is automatic if they have parishes of a different church sui iuris than their diocese. Establishment of such parishes has some other issues, but once established, the bishop’s right to say the hierarchical liturgies of all his parishes is normative.I keep hearing that Pope Francis is bi-ritual and multi-ritual, but no one has been able to tell me when he was granted those faculties and for which rite.
Also, does anyone know of any quotes of his or snippets from his writings that discuss Eastern Christianity or his involvement with Eastern Christian Communities during his pontificate in Argentina?
Jesuit are educators so they are constantly studying and because they live in communities they are also teaching and learning from each other, so it is not surprising Pope Francis would know something like this.Like all the other Popes it will be interesting to see what his interest have been.the faculty for bishops is automatic if they have parishes of a different church sui iuris than their diocese. That his holiness speaks Ukrainian, and is familiar with the Byzantine Rite, well, that tends to indicate that he may have held faculties prior to becoming Archbishop, or took some training after…
But the Church has hardly penetrated into India at all, even though it was anciently established there… it’s still very much a new frontier.Pope Francis seems to be better than your average Jesuit. Thank God. Apologies to anyone here with Jesuit links but they have a bit of a reputation for thinking themselves intellectually superior to the rest of us.
I saw the Vatican spokesman on CNN today when he was asked why the Pope had chosen the name Francis. He talked a lot about St. Francis of Assisi, but I thought he said the Pope would tell us tomorrow his reasons for choosing that name. I was surprised he didn’t mention St. Francis Xavier but maybe St. Francis of Assisi was the first name to spring to mind. St. Francis Xavier was my sister’s favourite - she did the Novena of Grace every year. He brought the faith to India and, according to Wikipedia, his ambition was to evangelise China. I see China as the Church’s last big frontier. We Europeans and Americans have had plenty of opportunity to hear the Word of God and now it’s up to us to live the faith or turn our backs on it. It’s China’s turn to hear the Truth.
A rite and a liturgy are two different things though. A rite may only be established by an Apostle or one of their direct followers. This means there can be no new rites of the Church. But the Church has hardly penetrated into India at all, even though it was anciently established there… it’s still very much a new frontier.
It’s unfortunate the Holy See did not listen to the Jesuits centuries ago when a Chinese rite was developing. That permanently scarred evangelization there.
Ven. Fulton Sheen suggested a future Doctor of the Church may use Confucius as a natural steppingstone to Christ, as Augustine used Plato and St. Thomas used Aristotle.
I didn’t know that. Would a “direct follower” be someone that had personal contact with the Apostle while they were still alive?A rite and a liturgy are two different things though. Yep, basically the same standard for valid authorship of a book in the bible. So St. Luke would be cool to start a rite, St. Jerome not so much.I didn’t know that. Would a “direct follower” be someone that had personal contact with the Apostle while they were still alive?
Which rites were started by direct followers?
He is a different Pope that is for sure. I’m a fan of them all, and I was sad to see our prevoius pontiff go. But I am heartened to have such a worthy successor. God has blessed his church!I have been watching on tv and reading abiut Pope Francis. I feel hope and a new begining. He is showing us that he loves us, by his actions and words.
