The Only way to proclaim the Gospel the apostles proclaimed is to profess and practice the Catholic faith. The Only way to teach the Gospel is to teach the Catholic faith. There is no other way to teach the Gospel.
No one can learn the basic truths by having someone read the four Gospels, which are narratives of the life of Jesus. A narrative of the life of Jesus is NOT the same as the Gospel the apostles taught and preached.
If the Gospel the apostles taught was the Catholic faith, then they ONLY way we can teach the Gospel is to teach the Catholic faith, the same way the apostles did, in an organized and sysmatic manner. That is why the Pope says the Catechism is a sure norm for teaching the faith and not scripture. The Catechism presents the same Gospel the apostles taught in the same manner they taught their Gospel, that is in an organized and systematic manner. In doing this we should quote the scripture and the Gospels as a witness to the teachings we are presenting, so that they will stick in our minds. But the basic Gospel we proclaim is the Catholic faith.
Thus, when we catechize, (teach the Catholic faith, in an organized manner,) we are presenting the Gospel, the same Gospel the apostles proclaimed, in the same manner they proclaimed it.
This is not my opinion but the teaching of the Church. Look in the General Directory for Catechesis.

I repeat, the Apostles and their successors did NOT proclaim the Gospel by reading the Gospels and giving explanations of those readings.  It cannot be done.  They proclaimed the Gospel by professing and teaching the Catholic faith.
   The Catholic faith comes to us from the apostles as the first Eucharist prayer of the mass says. The Catholic faith does not come to us from the bible, though the bible contains some of the teachings. The Catholic faith does not come to us from the written Gospels.  It comes to us from the apostles.  It is the Gospel they taught and preached. They appointed bishops to carry on this Gospel.

Thus to proclaim the Gospel, the Catholic faith must be proclaimed and taught. Reading the four Gospels and giving an explanation of them is NOT proclaiming the Gospel the apostles taught and preached.

Thus, the Gospel is not simply the words and deeds of Jesus in the four Gospels, (they are part of the Gospel) but it is the whole Catholic faith that the apostles learned from Jesus and handed down to us, and which is a living Gospel which grows in understanding of what Jesus has revealed to us.

I would like to know who the experts are but I forgot in that post to ask who gave the Nihil Obstat in the Encyclopedea you refer to. That would be required to attest that the book is free from both doctrinal and moral error.

If some people still think the Gospel is only the words and deeds of Jesus in the Bible, then please explain who God is, who Jesus is, why did Jesus become man, what salvation is, what sin is, what grace is, what the Church is, what exactly do we need to do and believe to enter heaven, why shoud we pray to the saints only by reading the Gospels.

No one can do this. Neither could the apostles or their successors do this.

Thus, the apostles or their successors had to teach and preach a Gospel, not simply read the Gospels.

We know the Gospel they taught was the Catholic faith, because the teachings the first Christians believed were all Catholic.

The apostles or their successors did NOT teach the Gospel by simply reading the Gospels to the people, (it cannot be done) they taught the Gospel by preaching and teaching the whole Catholic faith.

When we learn a basic Catechism, when we learn the articles of the creed, the sacraments, the commandments and prayer, we are learning the entire Gospel.

I was never taught this in 57 years, till I read it in the General Directory for Catechesis.

I was never taught that the Baltimore Catechism presented the Gospel, the same Gospel the apostles taught and preached

Before Vatican II priests taught new Catholics by teaching the Baltimore Catechism, not by reading the Gospels. This is because that catechism presents the basic Gospel, the same basic Gospel the apostles proclaimed.
When the apostles taught the Word of God, the Gospel to new converts, they taught the exact same teachings as the Baltimore Catechism, with the exception of explicityl presenting more developed teachings such as the Immaculate Conception.

Thus, priests were teaching the Gospel to converts the same way the apostles did it.

So, to teach the Gospel, we must teach the the Catholic faith, using the Catechism or local catechisms as a norm for teaching the faith.

Now, some people implied they knew all this.

Why then in the past when I asked anyone what the content of the Gospel Jesus taught, or the apostles taught, nobody got it right. No one told me it was the whole Catholic faith.
Now, there are very orthodox and knowledgable people in these forums, and if they did not know what the Gospel was, then ordinary Catholics are even more lost.

Why is it that homilies never go through the whole Catechism and teach the whole faith over the course of the year. Because everyone, believes the Gospel is only or mostly the words and deeds of Jesus in the Gospels. We have all been misled. The smoke of Satan has fooled all. Only the faith of the Popes has not failed.

Try to find ANYONE on the internet, or ANY BOOK, (after Vatican II) that claims the Gospel message and the Catholic faith are the same, or that we proclaim the Gospel by professing the Catholic faith or that we teach the Gospel by teaching the Catholic faith, or that we learn the Word of God by learning the Catechism, or that we learn the Word of God by learning the Catholic faith.

I hope you can, because maybe they can explain it better than me. But so far I have found nothing. It is only the Popes, through their encyclicals and the documents they approve, such as the Catechism and the General Directory for Catechesis that I learned any of this.

Furthermore I really fail to understand the point of this thread. Who has been misled?? The few thousand people out of 1.1 billion people that have an encyclopedea. Nobody gets their faith or understanding about their faith from such a book. Its just a reference book that I bet very few people have.I think you are making a big fuss over nothing!!

The “Nihil Obstat” and “Imprimatur” are official declarations that a book or pamphlet is free of doctrinal or moral error. The Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur are issued by individual bishops, and merely mean that a work has received the “rubber stamp” of some local episcopal bureaucracy. Thus, the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur are not part of the infallible charism of the Church.
In other words, it cannot be trusted.

I was not trying to say that the Catholic Encyclopedia started this false understanding of the Gospel, but this encyclopedia was in widespread use for many years and no one objected to this definition, (“The word Gospel usually designates a written record of Christ’s words and deeds”). That shows the widespread acceptance of this error. That was my point. This error has been in existance for most of the 20’th century, and was widespread and accepted. We have all been misled for almost 100 years.
The Church teaches the Gospel was everything Jesus taught and preached to His apostles, that is everything handed down in scripture AND Tradition. All this was handed down by the apostles to their successors as the Catholiic Faith. The first Eucharistic prayer at mass says “the catholic faith which comes to us from the apostles.” How does it come to us from the apostles? It was the Gospel they taught and preached. The apostles did not teach and preach the Gospel,** then** teach and preach the Catholic faith.
The Gospel they taught was the Catholic faith.

The Catholic Encyclopedia makes the word “Gospel” into a Protestant definition. It eliminates apostolic tradition. This is contrary to the constant teaching of the Catholic Church.
It is only through apostolic tradition, as taught by the Church, that we can learn the Gospel.

This false understanding IS predominate and believed by almost 100% of Catholics. Except for articles by the magisterium,** I have NEVER heard or read the correct understanding,** and I am 57 years old, went to Catholic schools all my life, and I read a lot.
If you can name me any book, any article, any talk by anyone who explains the true meaning of the Gospel, then please let me know. In other words, NOBODY knows what the Gospel is.

This is extremely serious. All Catholics are called to evangelize, proclaim the Gospel. How can they proclaim and spread the Gospel if they don’t know the content of the Gospel. That is why Catholics are so poor at evangelizing. They don’t know what the Gospel is. You can’t evangelize what you don’t know.

Priests know their primary duty is to proclaim the Gospel.
But, why do you think even the good and holy priests don’t teach doctrine. Why do you think people complain that they “are not being fed”, meaning, they are not being taught.
It is because the good and holy priests are not taught that the Gospel Jesus taught is the Catholic faith. They believe the Gospel is what is primarily what is contained in the four Gospels or in scripture. So, they tend to only explain the scriptures or the theme of the readings. There is no way you can learn the Catholic faith in this manner. There is no way adults can receive a continuous catechesis of the faith in this manner. That is why Catholics don’ go to mass, why they receive communion in mortal sin, and think there is nothing wrong with abortion, divorce and remarriage, etc.
It is NOT bad priests who fail to teach. It is good and holy priests who are simply following the false understanding presented by everyone, including bishops, cardinals, theologians, scripture scholars, etc.
In other words, they are thinking, why should they catechize, when the the Church teaches their primary duty is to proclaim the Gospel? Why should they teach the catechism, when their primary duty is to proclaim the Word of God?
Good and holy priests are only doing what they are taught to do by everyone. As long as they believe the Gospel and the Word of God is are limited to scripture, as interpreted by Tradition, they think they are proclaiming the Gospel when they explain scripture according to the Church’s teachings as handed down in apostolic Tradition. They are doing exactly as they are taught.
Of course, scripture never teaches abortion, never explicitly mentions mortal sin and venial sin, never teaches the primary purpose of Holy Communion is to give us the grace to overcome mortal sin, never teaches what happens at the Mass, never explicilty says fornication is a mortal sin, etc.
Thus most Catholics don’t vote for pro-life presidents, practice fornication before marriage, which results in divorce usually within 3 years after marriage, have abortions, leave the faith, etc.

All this because of a false understanding of the gospel.

If all knew, what the Popes know, that the Gospel handed down by the apostle is the Catholic faith, then things would change.

Then they would realized that to proclaim the Gospel, the Catholic faith must be proclaimed. To teach the Gospel means to teach the whole Catholic faith, everything in the creed, the sacraments, the commandments and prayer. This would change everything.

Thus the meaning of the word “Gospel” has enormous consequences for Catholics, and for the world since only the Catholic Church has the full truth.

But so far no one knows the meaning of the word Gospel. We are all misled. We have all gone astray. We all believe we don’t need to listen to the Popes encyclicals, or the General Directory for Catechesis approved by the Pope.

Notice what the new Pope Benedict writes concerning the
compendium of the Catechism, ( a shorted more concise
form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church):
“This Compendium is a renewed proclamation of the
Gospel in our time.”

Why is this catechism a renewed proclamation of the Gospel?

Because it presents the Catholic Faith, which is the Gospel the apostles proclaimed.

This pope is only carrying on the correct understanding of the previous popes.
