As a general comment, I would simply say that I’m not expecting any sort of forceful alteration of the OF anytime soon. The Holy Father first and foremost wants us to better understand the Mass and appropriate the good of the EF into the OF. Only once this is well underway will he, if still alive, try to ram through any more than incremental changes (which, granted, might include a trimming of the options of the OF).

I have heard rumors that there will be a new Missal coming out in 2009. Anyone have any more information regarding this?

I think that you mean the offical English translation of the Missal that was promulgated in 2002.

It’s taking that bishops that long to translate Latin into English in a way that wouldn’t get an ‘F’ from any Latin professor.

I think that there will be more optional additions to the EF - such as incorporating the new prefaces and saint feasts.

I think the OF will be revised by eliminating options rather than through any major revisions to the texts. However, I’ve heard rumors about the EF offertory prayers either being restored to the OF or becoming an option.

Personally, I would like it if the texts of the OF would be reformed a little to bring them more in line with the EF - particularly if they are the people’s/server’s parts. A good example of this is the Confiteor - why not restore the old version with the small litany of saints so that both masses have the same version of the prayer?

I’d also like it if the proper chants/antiphons were once again made mandatory at the principle mass or high mass in the OF. The only downside is that I can just see hymnal companies dashing off to write trite melodies for all of them.

Actually I wouldn’t mind these sort of revisions at all - for example making Eucharistic Prayer I standard in the NO.

At daily Mass the other day we had a guest priest who used EP I, which doesn’t get used often at all round these parts, and it struck me then that less choice would be much better in this part of the Mass :yup:

This may be the sort of thing His Holiness will implement in the foreseeable future.
