We need a new introduction

I attend two Masses.At one the music leader says something like “Good morning and welcome to St. Mary’s parish and a special welcome to all our guests today. Please join me in singing our entrance hymn, number 123 in Breaking Bread.”

At the other Mass, it’s simply “Please rise for our entrance hymn, number 123 in Breaking Bread”.

However, we only have one priest so there’s no question who is presiding at Mass. And we mention the intentions in the Eucharistic prayer so there’s no need to say them before Mass. And Father mentions the week (3rd Sunday in Ordinary time) before the sign of the Cross.

If you are visiting with us we welcome you and hope that you return to worship with us again in the future. To be fair, it’s the priest who wants this type of introduction. They do it at his old parish (probably his idea) and he “introduced” the introductions at this (his new) parish.

Our introduction is usually like this. I’ll use yesterday’s for an example:

We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and electronic devices at this time.

Good morning/afternoon! We gather as followers of the Lord Jesus Christ today to celebrate the liturgy for the Eight Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scripture Synopsis can be found in the Breaking Bread Hymnal on page 39. Today we are reminded to seek first the kingdom of God, and how God is the rock of our salvation, our refuge, and our strength.

This Mass is being offered for the repose of the souls of (list names here). May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Our presider for this liturgy is (list name here), and our processional hymn can be found in the Breaking Bread Hymnal. It is hymn number (list number), (list name), (repeat number, stressing each digit).

Our parish has just started using introductions similar to what’s been posted already read by the lector. Along with the priest’s name they also include the names of the altar servers, the lector, the choir director and the Eucharistic ministers.

Now when I was a member of a smaller 1 priest parish, I would have said what is the point, unless there was a visiting priest.

We have two priests, but I think it’s pointless to mention the ‘resident’ priest when the majority of the congregation is going to know who it is when they see him. Even if you announce the priests name, visitors won’t know who that is anyway.

That said, I do announce VISITING priests. I have been known to butcher the names on occasion Gotta love the foreign priests (LONG Polish names, Indian names, etc).

Anyway, the intro is done a few different ways. If the Pastor is celebrating, he welcomes everyone, does the announcements, mentions the page number for the readings (new hymnals hopefully soon…won’t have the readings), and then I announce the opening hymn.
If the Assoc. Pastor is celebrating, during the summer (tourist season in this area) he will greet everyone with a few notes about the way we do certain things (ie, kneeling during the consecration, standing during communion) in our Diocese. He will then mention the particular Sunday (9th Sunday in Ordinary Time), ask everyone to stand and greet each other, and I then announce the opening hymn.
If I do it, it goes something like this:

Good Morning/Evening. Welcome to ----- Church on this — Sunday in —. Please stand and greet those around you. Please join in singing number ### “title” with a (usually) short intro, and the song begins.

If we have a visiting priest, before having everyone greet each other I will announce the priest (Our celebrant this weekend is --). Again, the foreign names are fun to pronounce.

Thus, if you like the one at your parish why and what is it. Please share positive introductions please. If you dislike yours why?

I am unfamiliar with the concept. There is a procession with a hymn or the entrance antiphon, the greeting and blessing and Mass continues. What is an introduction? If the priest is saying and doing what the rubrics required, it is definitely not lame.

Good grief, why don’t y’all just roll the credits on a monitor after Mass?
