Most Rev. Donald W. Trautman, bishop of Erie and current chair of the United States Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy, concluded his recent article in America magazine—in which he discussed the proposed English translations of Mass texts—with the admonition to “Speak up! Speak up!”

He has received hundreds of letters in response to his request. Here are excerpts from some of the online responses he has received. We are using only first names in order to protect the privacy of those who wrote.

The very first post sums it up nicely.

The church is in desperate need of liturgies and programs that will promote faith not drive people away. As I sit at Mass and see the dwindling number of participants particularly young families I say to myself Last one out turn out the lights!

So the Liturgy we have right now is driving people away, and she wants to keep going right along the exact same path.

Maybe if the Liturgy was more Trancendent and less Mundane, it would bring more back.

And her biggest complaint, that the Mass is going to be more Literal and that people should actually pay attention to Indulgences.

many see as a feeble response with much greater attention paid to plenary indulgences, the Latin Mass, the literal translation from the Latin etc

I’m already angry from the abuses I sat through at this morning’s Mass. I really didn’t need anymore of this modernism shoved in my face. You should have put a blood pressure warning on your post; I almost punched in my monitor.

I penned a letter to His Excellency myself, but try as I might I couldn’t tone down the language to a point I thought befitting his episcopal dignity, so it remained unsent. His position on translation is absolutely ludicrous, and I’m actually quite surprised the authors of the drivel in those comments felt the new, actual translations of the Latin are ugly compared to the candy-cane para-para-para-paraphrases currently in use. It’s a sad day when the banal is trumpeted as a paragon of beauty. They probably revel in the splendor of communist architecture, too.

We actually have quite a few lovely churches, but many of them have been gutted (one is gorgeous from the outside, but a church in the round with no crucifix)

I thank god I found the Church I go to, and Fr. Larry, cause I would go insane elsewhere.
I actually told a friend of mine going through RCIA to come to my Church. We had about 100 enter the Church with us, as oppose to the 10 that came in at the Cathedral from the rest of the Diocese.
