Good morning:wave:

Anyone listen to Fr Rocky, on Relevant Radio? So happy that the station comes in clearer in my neck of the woods, near Tampa Bay:thumbsup: It was not the case a few months ago.😦

Anyways…Fr Rocky takes questions from listeners calling in to the show, on Tuesday mornings. Today, a woman called in and asked about ‘what happens when we die?’ Some static creeped in here and there, but towards the end, Fr Rocky said…‘we will be rewarded according to our deeds.’ (when we come before Judgement Seat, some day)

What did he mean by this? I think I know what he meant, but if one is not Catholic listening to that station, it’s possible he/she could misread that to mean that Catholics believe we ‘earn’ salvation, through our good deeds.

I am interested in hearing your explanation, or thoughts to this–or if you happened to tune in to RR this morning, and heard it for yourself?

He’s saying, in a summary way, what Scripture records. You can’t just focus on it (or you get a works-salvation), but there’s a reason the Bible is as big as it is, because it’s hard to summarize and do all of it justice.

“Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:28-29)

For he will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. (Romans 2:6-8)

If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. (1 Corinthians 3:14)

The huge difference is between the words “reward” and “earn”…

“Reward” - **Something given or received **in recompense for worthy behavior or in retribution for evil acts.

“Earn” - To gain especially for the performance of service, labor, or work: earned money by mowing lawns.
  • To acquire or deserve as a result of effort or action: She earned a reputation as a hard worker.
"Reward" is a gift given and “Earn” you must work for.

The huge difference is in the word itself and many people miss this very point and interchange them as if they are the same.
