I was praying the Laudes the other day when I came across a prayer to Mary which said “Mary, we worship thy Sinless Perfection.” I understand that this may refer to Jesus in Mary’s womb, but the prayer seems extremely strange as it is directed to Mary and Jesus is not even mentioned in the lines directly before or after this statement. My question is basically what does everyone think of this? I am a big supporter of Mary, but I do not understand this sort of movement in the Church that seems to always want to push the limits on how we can venerate our blessed Mother. These kinds of prayers seem honestly overboard in my opinion if not blatantly heretical.

Can you give the text of the whole prayer? I think it was the song Immaculate Mary star of the morning.

Here, in this world of both shadow and sadness
Veiling thy splendour, thy course hast thou run:
Now thou art throned in all glory and gladness,
Crowned by the hand of thy Saviour and Son.
Sinners, we worship thy sinless perfection;
Fallen and weak, for thy pity we plead:
Grant us the shield of thy sov’reign protection,
Measure thine aid by the depth of our need.

I understand that the word worship was used differently in older forms of english, but still we speak modern english today and texts should be updated as to not lead to confusion.

Yeah, I do agree with you. This does seem very odd but I wouldn’t worry to much about it.

It may be that this is translated from Latin, in which case the 3 degrees of reverence (Dulia (for saints), hyperdulia (for Mary), latria (only for God)) don’t really translate that well into English.

Ahhh I forgot about those three. I do remember hearing it back when I used to watch debates on between Catholics and Protestants about Mary.

Yes. This distinction isn’t often made in English. Judges have been addressed as “your worship.” We have “worshipped” kings and queens. In the 21st century you obviously see this usage less and it is more commonly used for church services now, but the word has a history of being used for giving high respect and honor and devotion to a person without treating them as God.

The terms are Greek and can be translated into English it is most likely the older ussage of the word Worship which meant something like honor in older times rather than what it means today. However today worship in English is meant only for God, I just think they should be careful about how they use it so as to not cause confusion as I was literally praying this prayer with some guys I went on a retreat with when we noticed the passage, one of the guys claimed we as Catholics do worship Mary (head smack) obviously he is confused but prayers like this just cause these kinds of situations.

I agree with your concerns .

In Daily Daily Sing To Mary we have “Daily, daily sing to Mary,
Sing, my soul, her praises due.
All her feasts, her actions worship
With the heart’s devotion true.”

But in Hail Queen of Heaven we have “O gentle, chaste, and spotless Maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee
Remind thy Son that He has paid
The price of our iniquity.”

" Remind thy Son that He has paid the price of our iniquity" . In no way can I find those words acceptable . As if Jesus , who in His glorified body bears the scars of His Passion , needs reminding of it .

I am pleased that in one new hymnbook we read “Remind us all thy Son has paid the price of our iniquity” .

Then tell the British judges today that they may no longer be referred to as “Your worship”.

its an old Title and its understood nobody worships Judges, worshiping Mary though is very unclear to many non-catholics, and apparently Catholics as well, so it is a different case.

The reminding part doesnt bother me, as it doesnt mean he forgot, just means we want her to pray to Jesus for us which is fine. The we worship your actions part I find very strange again though.
