Mark 12:29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Loving our neighbors is the second commandment, not the first. So sure, we should rub shoulders with the publicans and sinners like Jesus did, but only if it doesn’t interfere with our pursuit of God.
It is only by His grace that each one of us doesn’t fall into sin. We all have weaknesses that would lead to our downfall, if Satan were only given the chance to exploit them. We have to be careful not to go places and do things that are going to shipwreck our faith! That is our responsibility. God’s responsibility is to keep us safe from tests and trials that are too extreme, as every one of us can break under too much pressure.
