When you received absolution from the priest your sins were forgiven. The light penance that the priest gave you was to help you in your return to the grace of God. If the priest gave us the penance that we really deserved who would be able to accomplish having offended a God who is so good.
The compunction that you feel for your sins can be a part of your purgatory in this life. Be sorry for your sins and all the evil that you did, but at the same time know that the mercy of God is far greater than any evil you could have done in the past.
