Hey everyone!
I have a question that anyone is free to answer respectfully ;)! I am about to begin wearing a lace church veil or mantilla and I was wondering about any specifications surrounding it. I know that one should wear it during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass but should it be worn any other time, say when in a church where Christ is present in the tabernacle? Please and thanks!

It’s not just for Mass but anytime you are in church. For me it’s not always a chapel veil, but a scarf or some sort of hat.

A friend of mine who wears a mantilla does so to demonstrate reverence & humility to our Lord when present in the Eucharist - in a church when the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle, during Mass, during adoration in the adoration chapel when the Blessed Sacrament is present, etc.:gopray: :byzsoc:

cough in

How did this end up in Eastern Catholicism?

Hi there!
I’ve been wearing a mantilla in church for about 2 years now. I would say deciding to wear one has instigated quite a few (good) changes. Not only do you feel more humble and reverent before our Lord, but it seriously is like its just you and Him - no distractions. Whats even better is that by covering yourself, you draw attention away from yourself (although in this day and age, you sort of attract more attention cos ppl hardly see them anymore!!) but its attention that is more about respect then “look at me i have spray painted jeans on”. i also noticed that by wearing the veil i started changing what i wear to church. i never wore anything sleeveless or short etc, but wearing the veil made me want to dress more ladylike (i.e long skirts and dresses). its funny, something so simple can trigger some pretty significant transformations. can u imagine what would happen if all females started wearing veils in church? modesty could be the new trend 🙂
This a good link if you want to read up on wearing mantillas!

So after that speel about me, i should probably answer your questions (lol). Ideally, a veil should be worn when in our Lord’s presence, so really its probably best to wear them when you are in church, but having said that there are no hard and fast rules, really its what you are comfortable with. 4 of my friends also wear veils, and let me tell u, its just so amazing to humble yourself before our Lord in this way - something i always say is when a lady veils herself as she enters the church it is like the bride meeting the eternal Bridegroom.
Ok thats enough from me, i hope that helps!!

One thing that used to prevent me from wearing a head covering was that I didn’t always want to dress in a skirt or dress. I felt like wearing a veil and slacks would look funny. Vanity, I know 😃

Then, I felt a strong encouragement from the Holy Spirit to wear one. At that point, I felt it was a matter of obedience to God to wear one. So, I bought a lace kerchief that wear anytime I’m in the presence of the Eucharist. I do wear slacks with it–in fact, the majority of the time I’m in slacks.

I used to think that I shouldn’t wear a kerchief because I was worried that others would think I was putting on a pious show. But, after discerning a spiritual prompting to wear one, I realized that I was being too concerned about what others think. Vanity again.

I’ve had much spiritual fruit from wearing my kerchief. I think lacey mantillas are beautiful and more in keeping with the dignity of the Mass, but my nonCatholic husband says that he would feel uncomfortable with me wearing one, so I am sticking with my kerchief.

Wear it whenever in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. During Sick Calls, At Mass, during Adoration, if you’re a Christopher (what we call the people who bring the Eucharist to others), anytime you’re near the Blessed Sacrament.

That’s who you’re doing for, so that’s when you do it! 😛 😃

Hello everyone!
thanks to all who replied b/c u really helped me out. 👍 I look forward to wearing my veil with pride although no one else in my church does 😦 ! I can not wait 2 wear mine now! :extrahappy: I can really relate to leonie b/c i’m 16 and although i come from a very catholic family neither my mom nor any of my 4 sisters wear a veil or head covering. I 2 received a nudge from the holy spirit. i don’t know where it came from but i am drawn to wear one. i don’t want to look like i am trying to be more holy than others but i am drawn to something about them, perhaps the modesty (which is hard to find these days!!! i’m ashamed of my age group sometimes 😊), or maybe the reverence of it but what ever it is i feel drawn 2 wear one. Thanks again for ur replies they were all very helpful! I am still willing and eager to learn anything else you may know about the use of church veils!

Since I"m not married, I wear a headcovering to express my submission to the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
A chapel cap looks fine with nice slacks also.

if you feel a movement from the Holy Spirit then respond to it, but if your overriding concern is the opinion of other people, that will detract from any spiritual benefit of responding to this impulse. can’t imagine why there would be a “wear a veil makes you modest, don’t wear a veil makes you immodest” debate. If your reasons for either wearing it or not rest on someone else’s opionion, other than that of your confessor or spiritual direction, I would certainly re-examine your motives and pray more on the subject.

Pride is something we try to avoid. Perhaps you should not wear a veil, as an exercise in humility? Once this is acheived, then wear the veil.

Just a suggestion.

There is a certain amount of self pride that we all have when we do something that is difficult for us to do because social norms tell us to do otherwise. I don’t see this sort of pride being inappropriate or damaging in anyway. I doubt she is wearing it as a badge of honor, and I hate it when those who say they are proud to cover their heads are immediately told not to do it because pride is bad thing.

I can be proud of myself for overcoming my own insecurities and not caring what others think. It doesn’t mean I’m damaging myself spiritually in the process.

Anyway - to the OP - I’m very proud of you for deciding to do this! I think it is wonderful to see young girls with their heads covered - it is a beautiful sign of femininity, humility, and modesty. So very rare in that age group, especially these days.

There is nothing wrong with feeling more modest when your head is covered. The veil does not MAKE you more modest, but it may assist in helping you have a desire to BE more modest. And that is never a bad thing.

I didn’t say that she SHOULD NOT, wear the chapel veil, but suggested discerning her true motivation for it.

There is nothing wrong in wearing a chapel veil, if its for the right reason. If its for the wrong reason, i.e. a source of pride in order to stand out from the community, it can be harmful.

Actually, it is very dangerous to feel proud of what you do unless it is only pride in Our Lord’s actions through you (and not even in your response to His actions since your response is also due to His Grace). Now I certainly applaud any woman covering if it does help her to feel pride in Him, however what is risky is feeling self-righteous because of it. I know this since I have to watch it in myself. Whenever I get social rejections due to my own covering I know I have been given an opportunity to join Christ in His sufferings (and hopefully I will see it as such at the time:rolleyes:😊 ).

Congratulations Marygirl!!

You are doing the right thing. Wear it confidently as an expression of your catholicism.
I pray before meals in restaurants and make the sign of the cross. Or if at a public place and someone make an invocation of some sort, I will cross myself also. There are many things we can do as catholics not just to be seen but because we don’t have to hide or disguise who we are.

I pray for God’s blessings upon you Marygirl. It fills me with joy to read your thread. 🙂

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

Wow! These responses r really amazing and educational. I thank all of u, even those of u who criticized me b/c how else am I going to learn? anyway, i did want to replay to what Jim said. I totally understand ur reasons for warning me about pride and i am thankful that u care enough to speak up. However the pride i meant was not the harmful one of which we all must be extremely cautious but rather the pride of which Liza speaks…i realize that any kind of pride is dangerous but i only mean pride in the sense that i will be happy that i have followed the nudge of the holy spirit! thanks for the concern, it makes me hope again that the world really isn’t all that bad

Dona nobis pacem

I think it would be a very rare female who would feel “proud” in a vain sense wearing a headcovering in a parish where this is not a common practice.

We females like to fit in. It is more likely that such a lady would feel self-conscious in a vain way.

Mary, just do it for Jesus and don’t worry so much about anyone else. If anyone asks, you can say, “It’s just a little thing I’m doing for Jesus.” Then, change the subject.

I’ve been wearing mine for almost a year now, and I’ve never had anyone ask me why I’m wearing it. I think most people are more concerned with their own appearance than others, anyway.
