Just curious, is it acceptable to wear ones Rosary as a necklace under ones clothes?

Yes, many people wear rosaries visibly around their necks, in their cars, etc. You can wear a scapular or a crucifix that has been blessed too. We even wear blessed ashes on Ash Wednesday.

It makes no difference if it is under your clothes or not, the point of wearing sacramentals is to bring you closer to God.
 
you will get much debate… however:
  1. it was acceptable in the medieval church. we have sermons saying that it is fine to wear it as a necklace as long as you dont “wear it with the cross in the back over your bum” because thats disrespectful.
  2. look at my quote from St Dominic!!! put a Rosary about the neck of a sinner. wear as a necklace… if St Dominic said it was ok, i stand by his authority!!!
  3. now, in the modern age… many people wear Rosaries as jewelry disrespectfully! which is why it is frowned on… and people might take your wearing it OPENLY as a necklace as being a sign of disrespect, which would cause scandal, which is sinful…
but obviously under your clothes wouldnt show , so couldnt be taken as any disrespect, so its ok!

personally? i prefer to wear my scapular (i get the good ones from The Our Lady of St Carmel monestary nuns) and carry my Rosary, but . shrug

yu may want to get a knotted cord one, for comfort…

I have seen many peole wearing rosaries both around their necks and on cars etc etc .
 
So long as one does not wear one with disrespect (ie, as a decoration or a piece of secular jewelry rather than consciously as a sacramental), I do not believe there is anything sinful about it.
 
the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena wear the rosary around their neck as part of their religious habit. And I think it is not bad for us to wear it. But I can’t wear it; gangsters on street wear cheap wooden rosaries on their neck.
 
Here’s kind of an interesting story… albeit from a pre- gangster era - when a Rosary was seen by all solely as something which promoted holiness.

Alphonsus, King of Leon and Galicia, very much wanted all his servants to honor the Blessed Virgin by saying the Rosary. So he used to hang a large rosary on his belt and always wore it, but unfortunately never said it himself. Nevertheless his wearing it encouraged his courtiers to say the Rosary very devoutly.

One day the King fell seriously ill and when he was given up for dead he found himself, in a vision, before the judgment seat of Our Lord. Many devils were there accusing him of all the sins he had committed and Our Lord as Sovereign Judge was just about to condemn him to Hell when Our Lady appeared to intercede for him. She called for a pair of scales and had his sins placed in one of the balances whereas she put the Rosary that he had always worn on the other scale, together, with all the Rosaries that had been said because of his example. It was found that the Rosaries weighed more than his sins.

Looking at him with great kindness Our Lady said: “As a reward for this little honor that you paid me in wearing my Rosary, I have obtained a great grace for you from my Son. Your life will be spared for a few more years. See that you spend these years wisely, and do penance.”

When the King regained consciousness he cried out: “Blessed be the Rosary of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, by which I have been delivered from eternal damnation!”

After he had recovered his health he spent the rest of his life in spreading devotion to the Holy Rosary and said it faithfully everyday…

When I was in Vietnam I did as well as a brown Scapular. As the years went by I stopped wearing the rosary although I do carry one with me wherever I go. I still wear the Brown Scapular though and am never without it.

I didn’t want to start a new thread, for my question will also pertain to the wearing of a rosary.
As per my question, is it right to buy your own Rosary?
Also now, are there different ways to wear a rosary?

why won’t you buy yourself a rosary :D? I just want to share the rosary I bought from the Gambia. It is really beautiful and has the ‘hermit’ feel on it. Visit my blog page here: goldenmonstrance.blogspot.com/2010/02/rosary-from-hermitage.html

you can wear it around your neck, or at your side just like the friars and nuns do (usually they wear the 15-decade rosary). i have yet to find ways on how to do it.

I love that! 😃 Last Monday, I gave my blessed Rosary to my Protestant brother and he took it back to his UCLA apartment with him. I’ve had many very powerful mystical experiences just about every time I pray using that Rosary, feelings of deep interior pain and sorrow when I pray the Passion Rosary, and times of incredible joy when I pray the Glorious Mysteries, and other experiences when praying the other Mysteries. A lot of insights too. I knew the grace of God was working strongly through it and I’ve felt a great attachment to it, though I didn’t know it was a sacramental. So I decided to distribute the grace.

My brother reached his apartment Monday evening. That very night, he began practicing self-denial and a good deal of spiritual devotion in his spare time. He continued that throughout the week, though he hasn’t been doing that at all up to the night he took my Rosary home. All this was entirely spontaneous- he didn’t know why he was doing it or why it started then. He found it fascinating when I put his actions together with the fact that I’d given him my Rosary and he brought it back to his apartment with him that very evening.

He became extremely interested in the Rosary as a consequence and he’s been asking for information about it.

I’m so excited about the leaps forward that took place in his spiritual life from the moment he took my Rosary (now his 😦 ) into his room 🙂 🙂 :).

I got another Rosary blessed and I’m using that one now. I’m so glad for my brother! St. Dominic had the right idea.
 
I am a college student and when I walk around campus I see all these gangster guys wearing them and it use to make me so upset because I thought how dare they disrespect my Mother that way, so I started commenting saying to them, “oh wow your Catholic ?!?! No way! me too!” and usually they would just look at me funny. But I guess it is better to have a Rosary and not really know what it is that to not have one at all.

Also there are rosary bracelets available its just one decade and a crucifix bead but I really like mine and it’s useful whenever you don’t really feel like paying attention in class… 😃

Yes I agree too, I as a rule carry mine with me but I have worn them under my clothes once when I was attending a place I was really nervous about. I found wearing them in that situation made me feel close to our Blessed Mother Mary and Jesus,sort of protected and safe:)

if it is under your clothes then I assume you mean it is not being worn as a fashion statement, so it would not be a necklace as in jewelry. If you are wearing to keep it hand for devotion, and that is the custom in your culture it would be acceptable. It is hard on the rosary as they are not made for that, and repeatedly taking it on and off will likely break it sooner or later, and it can be definite safety hazard depending on your job. Why not get an inexpensive case and keep it in your pocket or purse, handier for praying.

That’s not a bad idea - or even carry a smaller Rosary instead of one’s customary one.

An Irish Penal Rosary, for example, makes a perfect pocket-sized rosary, especially for a man’s watch pocket. It’s barely noticeable and tucks away very neatly. Plus, the defiant spirit of a Penal Rosary makes one worth having around just for that reminder alone 😉
