Serious question, people from work and school like to ask me questions about the church and its teachings and the most recent one that I’m not too sure of how to answer is…is it alright for males and females to wear thongs? I really have no idea what to say, so what should I have said?

they are probably just baiting you when they ask questions like that. It does not matter what kind of underwear you have on as long as nobody else can see it. It they can, you are not dressing modestly.

In all honesty I don’t understand how anyone can wear a thong but my daughters tell me they are more comfortable than regular underwear. They are a size 4 and 6 so maybe they are more comfortable for them. As far as being sinful, as long as they keep their clothes on I don’t see how they could be sinful.

I personally find thongs disgusting but that is just my opinion. I would however laugh in the face of anybody that said underwear was a sin.

This is absolutely not the forum for such a question. Come on, get some common sense.

Then what would be? I am new to this and don’t really know my way around so please if you know more than I do, then please share. I am eager to learn.

Welcome to the forums!

I can understand your confusion. I think maybe Moral Theology would be the right place.

But in this case “Traditional Catholicism” means Catholicism that looks to its roots in a time before thongs were invented. 😉 It is more to do with Latin in the Mass, the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (pre-Vatican II) and such like.

I would imagine you’d get the same answer there, though–it doesn’t matter what kind of underwear you have on because nobody should see it. Keep in mind that means not just that you shouldn’t be wearing clothes that are so short that the underwear sticks out, but also that it shouldn’t be so see-through or so tight/clingy that people can see it. 🙂

Best wishes,

Why would someone wear something that looks so uncomfortable if they don’t intend to use it for the enjoyment of someone other than themselves?

It appears that some are missing an important point. Yes, it could be a SIN.

Are you/they acting in direct defiance of what a Parent has told them?
Reference the 4th Commandment

Are you/they trying to lure or entice someone to some type of illicit conduct?
Reference the 6th Commandment

Then we have a wide range of venial sins from pride, to stubbornness etc to consider.

We do have to consider knowledge, intent etc when applying the title Sin ( Reference the Cathechism.

Explaining to them from a point of view of Modesty is also helpful.

I hope this helps some.

Thank you for being willing to stand up for your Faith and the Church.
Remember its always OK to say I don’t know, But I’ll try& find out & get back to you.
This will allow you time to learn & another opportunity to share the Truth with them.
Many times these questions can be the means to help others do what they already know is right but due to peer pressure may have succumb to. 👍

Yours in Christ
