I am taking RCIA classes and i am planning on becoming Catholic. I love the old traditions and I live the veils I see women wearing. Are there any rules for wearing these veils, such as, a married woman has to wear a certaon color, etc.?

Short answer no, not now. In the past traditionally women wore white veils before marriage, and black once married.

There are many many threads on this, including quite recently. You might find it helpful to use https://forums.catholic-questions.org/search - just type in the word ‘veiling’.

I have velis of bright Tardis blue, silver and black. Sometimes I wear scarves.

Please.

Use the search feature for endless access to all of the previous veiling threads in existence on CAF. 🙂

Right to Veil in church? Traditional Catholicism
I Vail in church but not lately due to being injured and family emergencies. I would like to know if it is wrong to not Vail in church or if it is ok i also try and follow St… Paul’s teaching about Vailing in church. I also Vail because I like the symbolism of covering one’s own head while at mass.

Okay, I see now that I should have searched thia topic up before I asked. As I said before u am new to all of this and it all gets very overwhelming sometimes.

It’s ok. Since this is one of those questions that frequently…very frequently come up, members sometimes forget that a newbie my not be familiar with forum etiquette. It’s a learning process we all went through. Almost all forums have a search function you can use to see if it’s been discussed recently or not. Please, don’t be upset, just consider another lesson learned about forums! 😂

Welcome and if you have any questions that aren’t answered to your satisfaction, ask away! We really are a nice bunch of people and we DO welcome you!

There are no rules about veils - everything about them is optional / up to you. Enjoy!! There are some gorgeous ones on Etsy. I have spent tooooo many hours shopping for them there. 🙂

A belated welcome - I see you joined in 2015. If you do use the search feature, you’ll read that this topic can get quite heated - and unbeknownst to you, there was a thread very very recently (within the last week) where this topic was posted.

Yes, it can be quite overwhelming to sort through all the posts when you are digging for what appears to be a simple yes or no answer. And it should be a simple yes or not answer, except many people have different views and for the sake of balance feel it’s important to provide (name removed by moderator)ut on aspects that had not been previously stated.

But veiling isn’t the only topic that frequently comes up here. Sometimes the same subject was asked in the last few hours or few days, yet no-one seems to use the search function before posting, and sometimes that can be due to not understanding how forums works, or how to use the feature, or not even ‘seeing’ the search function symbol, and yes even just due to laziness.

There is also the other side, that because some topics are hot button issues, posters here are a little ‘over it’ and so that may explain why your post only got 8 replies, and of the type they were. Rather than rehashing and reposting the same old arguments/points of view, it is easier and more peaceful to just direct others to the search function.

That is why I myself posted a short reply - I answered your request for information (because you are in RCIA) [otherwise I would have not posted at all], and then I suggested you use the search function to read other peoples suggestions of what to wear/points of view.

Anyway, I hope you’ll put this behind you, continue to visit and read - there are a lot of subjects covered on these forums and a lot of information to be gleaned from some very knowledgable people including two priests, several deacons and a canon lawyer!

Actually, a priest told a friend of mine that married women should not wear white
veils.

We do like to hear from those in RCIA - so keep asking questions! Welcome!!!

But that’s not any kind of “rule.” It’s just his opinion / preference. At my parish all the ladies wearing white or off-white veils happen to be married. The single gals are the ones in blue, gold, pink, etc. (one high schooler seems to own a variety of colors and changes them up based on her outfit that day!)

There are probably also priests out there who’d tell women that they shouldn’t wear any veils at all for some reason or another.

As has been stated, the Church currently has zero rules for women’s head coverings. Women can wear any sort of veil or small non-extreme hat, or not cover their head at all. The only time a priest might have some say is if you are performing some public ministry for your parish, such as lector or cantor, in which case the parish priest/ pastor might ask you to follow some sort of a dress code while you’re doing your public ministry.

I have veils in various colors but usually wear white and black for Mass.

I think this was the head covering commentary in 1cor. While was wrong interpretations.
Did you accidentally leave out a word of two in your post? I cannot understand what you mean to say above in your second sentence (fragment).

This week I’ll be wearing a black veil to my mother’s funeral. She passed away tonight. I also wear black on Good Friday.

I usually wear white for church but also vary with the Liturgical Year (Red for the Holy Cross, green for Pentecost, blue for Our Lady).

Btw, in the Byzantine Tradition, green is the color for Pentecost, not red as in the RCC.
