Wearing Rosaries around your neck?

That’s unfortunate to hear young people not realizing that what they’re wearing is a symbol of something bigger than them. I’m 23 and wear a rosary; it’s never visible, always under my shirt. I wear it because I use it often and go to Church after work, and I love the reminder it gives me to mold my actions and thoughts to how God would want me to act. Only one person has asked to see the rest of the necklace and we had a good discussion about it.

And St. Alphonsous de Ligouri also wore one around the neck.

And I know of all whole bunch of Catholics who also do. And personally I don’t think anyone would burn in Hell for wearing one.

Very relevant since I observed this custom beginning in 1999, and it started among youth from Central America and Mexico. It was the opposite use of that “fashion trend” of “Let me wear a big old cross.”
 
You know, I met just a few weeks ago a young boy maybe 14 who was wearing one.

It seemed a bit odd. And I didn’t ask him about it. However, he’s demeanor was amazing. He was so soft spoken, and calm. Very sweet natured. He was otherwise dressed with some class.

I kind of wondered if it had had any effect on him, in the way that I was noticing it???
 
I wear a rosary under my shirt every day. I try to conceal I won’t be a bill board to people. I want to use it as a reminder for me and only God needs to know I am wearing it. But occasionally people do see the beads on the back of my neck (the part that the shirt doesn’t cover) and ask usually ask are you catholic and I say yes and that I pray the rosary every night (I do). I am a catechumen with the church so wearing my rosary helps me keep my faith strong and reminds me that Jesus always walks with me on my journey. So I don’t think wearing the rosary is wrong, I mean why make it into a sort of necklace if it wasn’t meant to be worn why not just like a string of beads.
 
I do not wear one around my neck. Though I have used one many of times. I say wear it if you like, its your rosary and your body in which you are setting it on. There is only one judge you will have to answer to.Unlike humans, God is the just judge. If he thinks it is bad mojo he will forgive you. 👍
 
Isn’t it funny how women and girls can wear a one-decade rosary bracelet on their wrists as a religious statement and a fashion accessory, and there’s no comment at all about them, other than maybe a compliment from a coworker or friend? I have several of these one decade rosary bracelets, and wear them frequently. I don’t pray with them much, though, because they’re a little difficult to put on and remove by myself, despite the lobster claw clasp. There’s a trick to draping the bracelet just right to be able to catch a link with the clasp, and I haven’t gotten the hang of doing that quickly.

It just strikes me as odd–in the US, anyways, 5 decade rosary around your neck=controversial, one decade rosary around your wrist=okay.

I agree with you. The neck, after all, is a “place of honor” on the body (just under the mind!) and therefore would be an ideal resting place for a faith symbol like the Rosary. Particularly if under the clothing.

But I can see the other argument as well: actually fingering the beads is easier with them on your hand.

For years I had wanted one of those one decade bracelet. When I finally purchased one, it was the nun behind the counter who showed me how to use the clasp. I seldom wear jewelry so I was at a loss. It was also easy to get the crucifix caught in things.
While I was on retreat in Conyers, I purchased a wooden one decade bracelet from the Trappist monastery. The cross lay flat across the wrist. The thin elastic running between the beads made it easy to slip on and off the wrist. The last time I saw my youngest brother I slipped it off my wrist and watched his eyes light up as I slipped it on his.
 
I personally wouldn’t, and I hate seeing “gangsters” running around with them around their necks! They also sell rosaries as jewelry in many stores where I live.

The argument “some gangbangers do this, so none of us should” is a nonsequiutur, IMO. Gangsters in some cities use athletic-team logo clothing; I doubt that sports fans in those cities have given it up.

Not true, not “some” gangbangers, nearly ALL gangbangers. Like I said don’t be surprised if cops look at you funny or talk to you if you wear one. It is very sad but the Rosary HAS become a gang symbol.
 
Many people wear crosses and crucifixes as jewelry, and as a sign of their faith.
For non-Catholics who wear the rosary, it may be simply another way of showing their faith in Jesus Christ. They may not know the prayer attached, and do see the rosary as a nice piece of jewelry that bears witness to their faith in Jesus Christ.

In his novel, Gates of the Alamo, Tom Wilkerson describes the Mexican soldiers under Santa Anna wearing their rosaries as hatbands. It is unlikely they had pockets in the trousers they wore.
 
St. Gerard of Majella did. I think that if you wear it with true devotion, it’s a good idea. So long as it’s not worn for “vainglory” or anything like that, it’s ok. If you are very devoted to our Lady it’s a good idea.
 
I frequently see children in my (public) school as well as young adults in the community wearing rosaries as jewelry. Just as with the cashier I encountered with a rosary tattoo on her forearm, I compliment the wearer on the beauty of the rosary and ask them if they know what it is. I have NEVER had anyone respond with hostility. With the children, I explain that the rosary is very important in the religion of some people, including me, and that each part…each bead…each space, has a special meaning or prayer associated with it. I tell the children that, just like an important object from any culture or religion, I hope to see that they would always treat the rosary with respect. I eapproached one young man in a fast food restaurant in a like fashion. He who knew the rosary had a Catholic connection, but knew no more about it. I gave him the same explanation about the rosary’s meaning, then wrote for him the Divine Mercy prayer: For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. This young gentleman, by all appearances of a bit of a hard-core background, thanked me profusely for the prayer. I thank the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for the grace to share our faith in this little way.
 
I have seen them but I think it appears foolish ,does not look right at least to me ,
 
Wearing Rosaries around your neck is a religious act of love of Mary. It is sad that some regard it as foolish. This is not Catholic in essence and a irrelevant word toward reverence to the Mother of God.

During confession one time I asked the priest this very question. He said as long as we’re wearing it for the right reasons, such as to ward off temptation to sin, it was alright. He said it is wrong, however, to wear it for the purpose of drawing attention to ones self.

I have discussed my view on this religious topic. Well, to be honest is I love Mary very much and She has been my companion in my work together with St Michael, St Raphael and St Gabriel. I have also discussed my work which is a mission given to me by Jesus to help to defend the Church and help those who are disturbed by evil possession and those who practice it. To save their soul and lead them back to the love of Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ himself. That is the mission given to me by Jesus Christ himself, in January 2010. I pray the rosary everyday the 4 mysteries and always ask Jesus Christ to send Mary and the three Saints or angels to help me in my work which He did. They are my companions everyday. This is joy in my ministry and my strength.

As you know Mary is the Queen of Angles. I love her dearly and she is truly my Mother. And St Michael, Raphael and Gabriel are my brothers.

Let go back to the topic then. Wearing the rosary is therefore a good action to do as a means for protection and good intimate relationship with Mary. If someone wear it, there is no wrong at all in doing so. It is wrong to be critical about it. If someone question this act of devotion and relationship, that is a misunderstanding and disrespect to the person who is doing it and Mary herself. In addition, to be critical about this religious act is an indication of a weak faith.

I have a pouch in which I keep my rosary, but it always gets tangled in the pouch, so I spend FAR too much time untangling it - and untangling it also doesn’t help the lifespan of the rosary. Tonight, after Holy Thursday services, I plan to watch and pray with Jesus, and was looking to this forum to find the best way to have my rosary ready to use, without all the fumbling and tangling. If I wear it around my wrist, I can’t use the Missal easily.
