I have come across conflicting information on this subject. It’s really kind of hard to tell, since Google is turning up so many different answers.

I basically wanted to ask, is it wrong to wear a Rosary in this instance? I often want to wear one for comfort when I’m scared, or feeling particularly spiritually needy. I have done it before, but I stopped when I wondered if this would be wrong. I would never wear one in public or as a fashion piece, just in the privacy of my own home.

Is this wrong?

I don’t believe it is wrong… it is a persons intention (as it concerns this topic) that dictate if a usage is “wrong” or not. Since you are wearing it out of devotion to our Lady, I think that is a wonderful thing… I would hope that when the time was appropriate you would take it off from your neck and PRAY! 😃 … but I would not worry about it… the only way it would be wrong is for those people who wear it strickly as “jewlery” and don’t show proper dignity to the Mother of God.

John Paul pray for us,
Scott

I have carried one with me in pockets to give me comfort while at work or around my family…until my mom found them and threw them out:(

I think wearing them is fine as long as its not showy and like jewelry.

I don’t like it when I see people wearing the Rosary because it isn’t jewellery. It is a sacramental and should be treated with respect. I think that the majority of people who wear them aren’t even Catholic and only do so because they think that it looks good.

However, if a believer wants to carry a rosary with them for comfort then I see no problem with this. It would be even better if they carried it with them so that they could pray it during their daily life.

Why on earth would your mom throw your rosary out?! That is a terrible thing to do. I am assuming that your mother isn’t Catholic?

Nope, she’s definitely not Catholic. She believes all the myths and lies about Catholicism and won’t listen to the truth. They vanished when I was in her home last, when I had been keeping them right next to my bed at night to pray before sleep. I remember she went in my room for something, and next thing I knew the rosary was gone. I’m sure she believed she was helping me by getting rid of them.

Luckily, I have ten fingers! Getting rid of them won’t stop me from praying.🙂

Personally, I wouldn’t wear one.

Sacramental items are not be worn or put to use in a secular way. I know you said you wouldn’t wear it as a fashion item, and it would be in privacy, I still don’t think it was meant to be worn on our person. To be safe, get yourself a nice pouch that’s meant to carry your rosary in a respectful manner and keep it in your pocket or in your hand.

If you want to wear a sacramental item, than maybe you should wear a scapular, which is an item that is meant to be worn. It is a great devotional that will keep you close to Mary at all times…🙂

I think St. Louis DeMonfort encouraged the wearing of the Rosary as one requirement a sort of confraternity.

It could never be wrong it is your privalige.
I see people wearinig those and St Christifer medels and I tell them “God bless you” and they realise why I say this and they smile and thank me.

Godbless

When I was young, the Domincan nuns all wore rosaries. But this was part of the habit. Fewer nuns look like nuns these days, having “kicked the habit”. 😃

Aren’t scapulars sacramental? I can understand that it would be wrong if someone was wearing a sacramental as an object of fashion, but I don’t believe this is the case.

Wearing it under (or over) your clothing wouldn’t be, as far as I can see, very different from carrying it in your pocket or purse.

God bless,

That’s what I was thinking. Sacramentals can be worn. Scapulars, holy medals, etc.

I have seen actually Rosary necklaces… in fact, look here at JCPenney

I would love to have one.

But, no, I will not wear my non- jewelry like Rosary as a necklace. I don’t know why…I got in trouble in RCIA for saying that I sometimes put my Rosary around my rear view mirror so that I will remember to pray while I’m traveling…Boy, did I get in trouble

I wear my rosary 50% of the time and the other 50% I keep it in a rosary pouch in my purse whenever I go out. If you feel comforted when wearing the rosary and understand that it is not a fashion accessory but a devotional item that must be treated with respect then by all means wear it and be at peace.

Peace

I heard this topic discussed on Catholic Radio some time back and the response was that a Rosary could be worn depending on the intent of the wearer. If worn as a fashion statement it would be wrong. If worn as the OP described I think it would be OK.

Sometimes I wear mine to bed. Theres nothing disrespectful about that in my eyes.

God Bless

I don’t see anything wrong with wearing it if your intentions are right.

However I have an atheist friend who, last time I saw her, was wearing a Rosary. I asked her why she was wearing it and she said she likes the way they look. It made me sad.

I wear mine. I find it comforting to have around my neck. I wear it inside my clothing, and it usually isn’t visible, but sometimes the beads are.

I think it is more respectful to wear a rosary than to put it in your pocket or purse where it can get banged around by your keys and whatnot. Also, I carry a lot of junk around in my purse/pocket, and putting the rosary, even in a pouch, in with your junk I think is giving it the status of junk. OTOH, once, when I was at a mall, I saw a girl, about fifteen or so, in a low-cut top with the rosary dangling in her cleavage. That was disrespectful, to say the least. I wanted to slap her, but I held my peace.

In Mexico, it is a custom for devout Catholics to wear the rosary, and I believe Maronite Catholics wear it also.

Once, when I was about eighteen, I was over at my parents’ house. They had just moved into a new home, and the previous owner had left a lot of rosaries in assorted drawers. I asked if I could have one. Mom said yes. The pants I was wearing that day had shallow pockets, and I had lost things, including money, out of them on more than one occasion. So, I started to put the rosary around my neck. She told me it wasn’t proper to wear the rosary, and if I was going to, she would’t give it to me. I protested, “I’m always losing things out of the pocket of these pants. I just want to wear it to get it home, I don’t want to lose it.”

“No, you put it in your pocket. If you’re going to wear it, you can’t have it.”

She’s not even a believing Catholic, but to her enforcing some artificial notion of propriety was more important than me getting the rosary home safely. I guess she would have preferred that it fall out of my pocket into the street to be run over by cars. Some people just have warped priorities, I guess.🤷

Aren’t scapulars sacramental?

Yes they are, but they are specificallly meant to be worn, which is what I meant.

They came from the scapulars which make up part of monastics’ religious habits – that ankle-length shoulder-wide, apron-like part of the habit that basically consists of a long rectangular piece of material with a hole for the head. Now however, they are basically two small pieces of rectangular cloth tied together by string, with one rectangle hanging over your chest, the other over the back. They stay hidden and are easy to wear.

The scapulars were just a thought as a replacement for the wearing of the rosaries since the OP sensed it could be wrong…

I wear a concealed rosary and therefore **armed and dangerous:) **

…also on my person is a Brown Scapula and a 12 inch crucifix, a miraculous medal, a benedict medal and my third order medal…hopefully if in an accident these should identify me as a Catholic!!!😃

I wear a rosary quite often but i definitely don’t wear it for show. I wear it as a reminder of faith, affecting my decision making to keep in line with Church teaching and morality. So in a sense i would actually encourage it. Some people live by their favourite passage of scripture to keep them on the path. I don’t like fashion rosaries at all. Keep your Rosary close to you and you will stay close to God.😃

Amen. I wish I hadn’t carried around my great grandmother’s pearl rosary, which was blessed by the Pope. It broke and now I’ll never carry around a rosary unless I’m traveling somewhere far away.
