A friend and I are planning to make a website to tell everyone about Catholicism and the Bible, any tips/advice.

ANY tips or advice would be GREATLY appreciated, and you have a conversion story you’d like to publish to this site, that’d be AWESOME.

(web hosts, pictures, what to put, layout, resources, stories etc)

These are but a few examples of useful Catholic sites and you can explore the links they have as well. These sites as well Catholic.com can give you a feel for what is already out there. You can then design your website to be a little different and with perhaps a different slant.

Great idea, I like to be original, something people will recognize as “standout” site.

I don’t have any suggestions, but if you need help in anyway, I can try to offer my services (which really isn’t that much… I can do easy repetitive tasks and stuff like that). Just PM me, whenever.

Any ideas for a good web address? This is important, but we can’t seem to think of a good one.

Before being able to answer this question, it’s important to know what makes your site different from the other Catholic Evangelization sites out there. Are you and your friends converts to the faith or are you Cradle Catholics? Have you had a strong reversion or have you been solid in your faith your entire lives?

You want your name to reflect who you are and what you have to offer on your site.

e.g. www.CradleCatholic.com - already taken
or www.RevertToCatholicism.com - available
or www.CatholicRevert.com - already taken
or www.ForeverWithChrist.com - available
or www.FullnessOfTheFaith.com - available
or www.ChristAllTheWay.com - available
or www.TheOneTrueChurch.com - already taken
or www.AtTheFootofTheCross.com - available

These are just a few of the names that roll off the tip of my tongue. But remember, you need to find a name that reflects your site and that will encourage others to come explore what you have posted.

Well, it’s a subdomain. seektruth.com is already taken, and I’m not happy with any other webhost, even the 2 paid ones I tried. This is unpaid (free), yet faster with more features. I don’t think they let you have your own domain though, even if you pay.

How’s seektruth.2ya.com or seektruth.co.nr for now while I find a good domain?
 
Any ideas of what to put on the first page (homepage) to attract visitors?

It’s good to be original, but make sure you look around and see the pro’s and con’s of some websites, and take all the stuff you like (and don’t be selfish, this website is not for you but for God and others), and compile it together as best as you can

the aim is to catch people’s attention but at the same time make it accessible, easy and fun to browse through

and count me in for help.
I know a little of HTML, and I have Dreamweaver.
I am also trying to do a similar “ministry” with AIM and myspace, but it takes too much out of me, and sometimes I just go straight into debates or evangelization

keep in touch, I wanna see how it works out

Does anyone know a simple but good template for a Javascript menu? The one I use now is ok, but doesn’t allow me enough space for the titles. Thanks.😉

  • do not worry about how it looks yet, but be planning on your contents:
  • who is your audience?
  • what kind of info you are presenting?
  • is there any interaction for visitors and/or members?
  • do you allow visitors to create their own accounts?
  • how many people are in charge of maintaining the website?
  • do you do your own programming?
  • start with your own domain and website service without using the free service: 110mb.com - the name sounds weird; naming your domain is very important. As you see, one poster already asked you what 110mb.com is.
  • Have you ever used any Content Management System and/or forum software?

I would agree here. In general you are not going to be to successful in drawing traffic by people searching for your content without your own domain (not sub-domain).

I run a blog called Ongoing Conversion where I talk about my experiences and observations as a convert. I prayerfully considered what I should choose for a domain name and found ongoingconversion.com. I believe life and faith is a never-ending process of conversion.

I would look for a hosting package (1and1.com, dreamhost.com) that would allow you to run a blog package like Drupal or Wordpress. You would have totally control over your environment and not have to deal with their ads being on your website. I use Wordpress on my blog. It’s very easy to setup, in fact, some hosting providers will install it for you as part of their service (look for Fantastico).

I’m pretty unhappy with the reliablity of some paid hosting I tried, but I’ll try getting a domain, or at least one that makes more sense.
