Engagement:

Well, DH was visiting me over the 4th of July weekend. I knew he had been shopping for rings because he’s very bad at keeping secrets and being discreet. So, I told my family that I thought I might be getting engaged that weekend and of course, all 5 of my younger siblings had to tell their friends. When he arrived, we went camping (separate tents, of course 🙂 ) with my best friend who got married about six months prior and obviously her DH. They kept talking about engagement stories and marriage and her DH kept joking around asking Scott (my DH) when he was going to ask me. When we got back to my parents’ house, it was the 4th, so all of my siblings’ friends were over and one told us congratulations before realizing that Scott hadn’t asked yet. I don’t think DH got it though, thankfully :).

Once everyone left, I suggested we watch Pride and Prejudice, my absolute favorite movie. DH seemed very open to the idea, but he offered to run one of my brothers to the video store first. When he got back, I was all ready to pop the movie in, but DH came up to me and said he was really tired and could we watch it the next day. So, I was quite bummed, but said “sure” and sat down to do some homework I had for a summer course I was taking. At that moment, my dad and brothers walk in, pop in some action movie and DH sits there and watches it. Well, needless to say, I was livid. So, I get up, take my homework, and start heading upstairs to my room. DH gets up to follow me, and I turn around, and say in a very annoyed tone, “You can stay here and watch the movie.” Of course, he gets up and follows me anyway, totally oblivious to my annoyance b/c he has one thing on his mind - asking me to marry him.

After we are upstairs, and I’m pretty much ignoring him completely, he gets up and says he’ll be back in a minute. When he comes back up, he’s all grins, so I know he’s asked my dad for my hand. My sister proceeds to come in and talk to us for two hours. By the time she leaves, it’s 2 am and I’m pretty much passed out. So, DH asks me how tired I am and goes and closes the door, which I thought strange. He then asks if we can pray. So we say some prayers and then he goes into what I like to call “spontaneous prayer” and thanks God for our relationship and asks Him to bless us. After that, I knew. He then pulls out a pitcher of water and a bowl and washes my feet. After that he gets on one knee, pulls out a diamond ring and says, “I want to spend the rest of my life serving and loving you. Jennifer, will you marry me?” And of course, I said YES!
oh my gosh–what a beautiful story! He washed your feet like Jesus did with His followers…what a self giving display of love for you…you are very blessed my dear! Thank you for sharing.🙂

What a nice idea for a thread whatevergirl.

Engagement – I knew that we were going to get engaged but I had no idea when it was going to happen, I really thought he would wait until we were both done with college. But the summer before our last year of college on father’s day he asked my dad if he could talk to him sometime. The following day he went out to my parents house to talk with them (I had to go back to school for a summer class I was taking) what I still can’t believe is that neither of my brothers ages 12 and 2 ever told me that he had come over and talked to them. My mom said she promised (threatened) to make their summer very un-fun if they said anything to me.

My summer class finished in early July and he told me he had a date planed for when I got home. He was acting so strange about everything, making sure I knew a number of times that he had it planned. I told my mom he was acting funny and she suggested that maybe he wanted to break up!!! MOM!!! I really didn’t think that was it but I never would have though he was going to ask me to marry him that night either! About 10 minutes before he was supposed to pick me up, my parents and brothers suddenly decided to go for a drive; they later told me they did so if he wanted to propose at the house they wouldn’t be there.

He told me that he wanted to go for a drive and as we were driving we saw a rainbow, I think he pointed the rainbow out to me 35 times J Our drive ended at a little Catholic Church which knowing my boyfriend was normal. We went in and prayed for awhile and then he knelt down said some very nice things which I don’t remember (he did write down what he wanted to say in his prayer book so I have some idea of what he said) I said yes and there was a BIG clap of thunder (we have always joked that we are not sure if God was happy or not – rainbow and thunder).

We then went out to dinner, to a restaurant that we didn’t realize until after we had eaten only accepted cash, we paid most of our bill with change and could only tip our waitress 23 cents worth of pennies. She was SO nice about it told us she was going to keep one of the pennies as a reminder of the newly engaged couple that found change in their car seats to pay their bill. :o

The Wedding –

We were married a little over a year after we were engaged.

My mom was my Matron of Honor, we have always been very close and it was very nice to have her as one of my witness.

We had friends and siblings as our other attendants.

My bridesmaids wore black dress they LOVED me for that they were nice dress and I have heard from many of them that they were able to wear them again.

We invited almost 600 people to the wedding (my family is HUGE! about 400 people were my immediate family!) and about 500 people came the church was packed!

During the mass we lit the unity candle, and the two taper candles we used were my brother and sisters baptismal candles; they passed away as infants and this way all of my siblings were there with us as we exchanged vows. We presented Mary with flowers well our priest and my Aunt (who also sang at my parents wedding) sang the Ave Maria.

My favorite part of the mass was that we gave each other communion. This was my hubby’s idea and that made it even more special to me.

The Reception –

At the reception we set out little pieces of paper and personalized pencils which we asked people to take and write us a note, something they wanted us to know about marriage or about one of us and we read them on our drive on our honey moon. They were fantastic!!! We got serious notes about marriage funny stories about us as kids, notes about what we said to our friends about each other when we 1st started dating, they were all great!

For our 1st dance we choose “I Will be Here” by Steven Curtis Chapman.

Because we had So many people after DH and I tossed the garter and bouquet, we had all our bridesmaids and groomsman toss one too. We also had the ring bearer and flower girl throw one for the kids.

Funniest part of the night was when DH realized when dropping his tux off at my parents house on our way out of town for our honey moon, that he had NO shoes packed, so on the 1st morning of our honeymoon we had to go to Wal-Mart so he could buy are pair of tennis shoes and sandals.
🤷

I totally forgot to mention my DAD made our wedding cake!! We had tried cake after cake and couldn’t find any that tasted very good. I told my dad his cakes always tasted to so good, that it was too bad none of these tasted as good as his. Well he went out and took a cake decorating class and surprised me for my shower by making a cake to see if he could do it. It was great he told me as long as I didn’t want a massive cake he would make it. I had a three tiered caked with smaller cakes set around it and then he made extra sheet cakes.

I’m not married or engaged yet, but I’m hoping for something along these lines:

ENGAGEMENT
I’d like it to be a diamond and/or emerald ring. Emerald is my birthstone. I think the proposal should be something like we went to Mass and then to a park and that’s where he would propose.

WEDDING
I wouldn’t have a large wedding. My cousin once removed spent THOUSANDS of dollars on their wedding and reception.:bigyikes: So the wedding would have NO MORE than 100 people. It would probably be in a church, because hopefully he will be Catholic too. Even if he is, we might have it in a park somewhere. It depends when the wedding is.

RECEPTION
I don’t know where we would have the reception but maybe that will be at the park too. Again it depends on weather. I would NOT spend a lot of money on my reception. It wouldn’t be that big, maybe I’ll only invite some of the guests, like my close family.🤷 I wouldn’t get a huge expensive cake. I’d probably just get maybe two layers.

DRESSES
ok, THIS I might splurge a little on. I don’t want one with a huge skirt, that would make me trip. Probably not a train either. I want it to be maybe a light cream color and preferably reusable. I would like a light veil. Bridesmaid dresses I don’t know yet. I’ll just have to find something I like. I think I want them to be a light blue-green.

Well, I hope that satisfies. 🙂

Congrats on the proposal.

I hope I may mention one thing that causes me concern…you said your wedding will hopefully be in a church.

If you are Catholic, it MUST be in a Catholic church, whether he is Catholic or not.

Make sure to put more effort into MARRIAGE planning rather than wedding planning.

Question–if one person is Catholic and the other isn’t…can it still take place in a Catholic Church?

If one person is Catholic… it MUST be in a Catholic church…no matter who they are marrying. If the person they are marrying is not Baptized, it is not a sacrament, only a natural marriage.

There are a few exceptions, for good reason, but there must be a dispensation from the Bishop and the marriage prep still has to go through a Catholic priest.

The Catholic church discourages marrying outside of the Catholic faith, but merely tolerates it.

ah, ok I see. I wasn’t clear on that. Would a RCC ever marry someone on a beach, let’s say? I have never seen that myself, but just thought I’d ask.

a RC cannot marry on the beach.

One of the few exceptions from the Catholic church is a protestant church…say, if the fiance’s parent was a preacher or something.

I didn’t get a chance to read all stories yet but I got one of my own. I will try to keep it short. My wife and I had been mutaul friends for about two years. I met her after mass one day when my best friends wife intriduced her to me. I live on the west coast of FL. and she lived on the east coast, so I would only see her once in a while at friendly gatherings when she would come to this coast. About a year and a halh ago we started talking on the phone. Her best friend who is married to my best friend told me to call her after I had just had a terrible break up. I mostly talked to her about that and she would give me advice about Gods love and his plan and all that stuff. She was planning to move to this coast at that time and I had thoughts of attraction but because of my last to relationships I was afraid to even think about it with her, especially since we had the same friends. Well the day she moved my best friend and I hgelped her moved and I fell in love. A few weeks later she told me that in a vision God told her that I was the one she would marry. Our first date was a Christopher West talk at a local church which was a huge conversion for me and a gift from God to be there with her. We dated about two weeks and my best friend was already telling me I should propose to her. I thought that was crazy because I tend to move fast in the past and I ended up messing things up. I was very reluctant but during a bible study one night I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I decided I would ask her to go to the church with me and pray. The chuch was closed and I had the keys so we were the only ones there and it was dark. The only light was the candle next to the blessed sacrement. I asked God what I should do and to give me a sign. I put my hand on the tabernacle box and said to God if this is what you want please give me the strength. I turned around and proposed and she said YES! When we were leaving the church she told me that when she was a little girl she dreamed of being proposed to in the church near the tabernacle which was my sign from God. We have been married for seven months and we love it!

Peace!

I never post here, but the temptation of this thread is just too much 🙂

Engagement:
I knew it was coming but had no idea when. He had lamented more than once about being too poor to buy a ring. (I believed him…)
SO, on my birthday last January…it was Sunday, we went to Mass, went out for brunch, then set off to Pittsburgh to see CATS, which was so much fun! That evening he took my to my favorite restaurant in the world and had the most spectacular, party in my mouth dinner. After we ordered he went to the car to get my presents. He came back with this mylar Disney Princess balloon with silver sparkles everywhere. I was SO taken aback. I couldn’t believe he would take such a tacky thing into such an elegant restaurant. But I decided to have fun with it anyway. After dinner our waitress brought over complimentary champagne. I looked at him and said: “I want to come here every year if this is how they treat you on your birthday!”

Then, out of nowhere he wanted to see my balloon and find out what the weight was made out of. I refused to let him: “get your hands off my balloon, you’re going to ruin it! You gave it to me and its mine! Hands off!”
“I just want to see! Come on!”
“No, I can tell you what’s inside! It’s a box full of sand! It’s a weight, that’s it! Now leave it alone!”
“Umm…look, I gave you the balloon, not the weight”
“Um, no! I get the whole package! You can’t give gifts and take them away! What’s wrong with you??”
“Would you relax for 2 seconds?”
“NO!”
I then looked away and took a sip of my champagne. When I looked back he unwrapped a small white box. I looked at him suspiciously, unwilling to be fooled, thinking it was probably earings or something. He opened the box and there was a black velvet box. He got down on one knee and I just started shaking my head. I couldn’t believe what was happening. This couldn’t be real! The whole time he was asking me to marry him I was saying: “Nuh uh, no way, no way, nuh uh, NO! This can’t be real! NO WAY!”
I started crying, I hugged him, crying “yes! yes!” I asked him to put it on my finger. It was so beautiful 🙂

Wedding:
We wasted no time and we married 7 months later! This past August 🙂
We had the most beautiful, elegant, and fun wedding I have ever been to. All day long people told us it was the best wedding, the “most Catholic wedding,” the most beautiful wedding, etc.

So, here’s the deal:

We married in a very beautiful but very small Church and packed 150 people in there. I wanted it FULL. I did not want to walk down an empty aisle.

We had 3 priests concelebrate. (that really helps the “most Catholic wedding” part)

I did not have a traditional procession. Everyone came in to "All Creatures of Our God and King. The Altar boys and priests processed in right before the wedding party.

We spent MONTHS picking out our readings and had explanations about why we picked them in our programs.

We explained everything that was done in the programs. For example, we said our vows holding onto a crucifix together (an old Croation tradition) and explained how we were uniting our marriage to the sacrifice of Christ and how we were recognizing the need to love like Christ.

After the vows, we dedicated our marriage to the Holy Family. We asked everyone to sing the Litany of the Saints for us as we did so.

The Reception:
Okay, we had an incredibly elegant reception that was also TONS of fun. AND we spent less than $4000 on the entire wedding!

Here’s the deal, we asked people to help! We’re poor college students (graduating next year) and we don’t have much.

We had it at a 100 year old Opera House. $1600 (yep, that’s it)
flowers: mom’s a florist, got 'em free!
DJ: free!
Cake: free! and SUPER delicious!
chocolate fountain: free
cotton candy machine: free
Photographers: free!
Food: $300 (we paid for the meat, a bunch of my husband’s mom’s friends who are amazing chefs offered to cook for free…it was amazing)
dress: $1025, was $1400

moral of the story: it pays to ask for help!

Dating Since: December 2002
Engaged: September 22, 2006
Wedding Date: July 5, 2008

We started dating my Junior yr and his Senior yr of high school, and wanted to wait til I was done with school and we could move back home before getting married.

We got engaged at one of the metroparks here. We have a very close relationship and had talked about marriage since about 6 months into our dating, so i knew it was coming. We’ve lived together since January 2005, and are very open with each other so i knew he didn’t have the money to buy me a ring. He worked very hard to save up the money so i value the ring that much more. I tried to tell him not to spend money on it and that i just wanted something meaningful but he insisted on getting something he deemed appropriate and nice.

I love everything about your wedding!!! Every idea, looks like it could be mine:blush: 🙂 I love the dress–and the ring. I love it! The past, present, and future…it will be something you treasure forever!

I love the idea of a brown fondent (sp?) cake…it looks soooo elegant, especially with the colors of the bridesmaid dresses. Well done!👍 🙂
