What are we to gain from the story of the wedding at Cana and Christ’s first miracle of changing water into wine?

How about some interesting lessons on the Blessed Virgin.
- Her intercession with Our Lord brought about the first of His public miracles.
- Her message to us all is the same as the one that she gave the stewards. (John 2:5) His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
- A good example of Mary’s intercession as “Giberah”, Queen Mother to the Messiah.
- An excellent lesson in the compassion of Our Lord and Mary. She interceded for them and Jesus acted in order to spare them the wedding disgrace of running out of wine for the guests. We can learn quite a bit from that.
- Verse 11 shows that at this point his disciples began to believe in Him. “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”

Apart from the deeper lessons we can take from this miracle one thing that always impressed me was that 56 gallons must have set them up for the rest of the week at least. Generous or what!!

There are a few things I get from the Wedding at Cana, some of which have already been mentioned.
One of the more obvious ones is the wedding motif. It is here that Jesus is first seen to bless marriage as something more than it was considered in Judaism - as a sacrament, as a type of the Father’s relationship with us and Christ’s with the church.
Another is that Jesus not only turned the water into wine but that it was wine of remarkable quality, thus showing God’s power to transform each of us into something exceptional, and to supply abundantly wherever there is need.
The idea of quality is more remarkable than the quantity (you ever seen how much alcohol people can go through at a big wedding? not to mention that it was probably drunk at every single meal alongside if not instead of water, even by children). It really shows Jesus going above and beyond what was asked or what was necesary.
A different thing that strikes me is the remark that ‘you have saved the best wine for last’. The older I get the more comfort I take in this statement, which reassures me that not all of the best of my life is behind me
Kinda like the tree in the Psalms ‘still full of sap, still green’ even when old

That’s rather a large crowd - do you think they were all invited? There’s an implication that the difficulties with wine may have been a result of some gatecrashing on the part of the apostles and that Mary (and Jesus perhaps) may have felt somewhat responsible for his posse drinking the place dry

If you really want to get a lot out of the book of John read it along side Genesis and Revelation.
How did they used to title texts, how does the Vatican still title texts? They use the first few words of the work. What are the first few words of Genesis? “In the beginning,” which translates to “Genesis.” How about the first few words of the Gospel of John, “In the beginning.”
John’s gospel is the new Genesis, Christ’s sacrifice the new creation.
Look how the elements of the 7 days of creation are there in the first chapter of John, light, water, spirit.
Now John uses some really funny words, “The next day…” Start counting the days and see what day the wedding feast at Cana falls on.
Now if you really want something that blows your mind, compare the Wedding Feast with the creation of Eve and the fall of man. Its just amazing. I’m not gonna ruin it here for you. Open up your bible!

My favorite thing that I’ve been taught about this passage is the simple lesson that God cares about us. He’s not above showing up Himself, In Person, to help us in whatever small or large needs we have in life, so infinite and overflowing is His power and generous love.
But another point I heard a priest make on EWTN was that, when Mary told the servants to “do whatever He tells you”, they followed the Lord’s instructions exactly.
He said to fill the stone jars with water, and they filled them to the brim. Not half way.
And of course the result was a miracle - water turned into the finest wine. I think he said that the wine was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. And also that after the miracle “His disciples started to believe in Him.” I.e. their faith was increased. The same thing will happen to us, if we “do whatever He tells you.” Really made me think.

A friend of mine, 30 years ago, was all but divorced from her husband. They both had lawyers. She had picked out an apartment. They had decided which kid would live with which parent. Then she realized that even if they divorced, she would always have the father of her children in her life. She would never be “free” of him. So she gave it another go. Now she wonders if she wasn’t deranged at the time because the guy she wanted to divorce is the best husband any woman could ever dream of. For her the take-home point is:
They had to run completely out of the ordinary wine before they got a crack at the good stuff.
Moreover, in John’s progression, this is the “least” of the miracles. This one just speeds up nature’s clock because nature will turn water into wine (via the grape, of course) in the ordinary course of things. The miracles get more and more “complicated” as the Gospel progresses.
