I have recently become my parish’s “designated bell ringer,” since I took it upon myself to toll the bell at my grandfather’s funeral last October - the first time our church bell had rang at a funeral in close to 50 years, and have been tolling it at every funeral since then (in addition to ringing prior to Sunday Mass). Now, there is going to be a wedding at my parish next Saturday, and I would like to ring our church bell at a joyous occasion for a change - we are an older Parish, so, unfortunately, funerals have been much more common occurrences than weddings of late
.
Therefore, since, as with funerals, our bell has not been rung at a wedding for many years, my question is when, how long/how many times it is supposed to ring during a wedding? I have heard that it is rung at the end, as the bride and groom are leaving, but I am unsure how long it is supposed to ring. Is there a “fixed” rule, as with funerals (i.e., funeral rule = three times for a man, twice for a woman, then one toll for each year of the deceased’s life), or is it simply until everyone has left the church, etc.? Any (name removed by moderator)ut would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
James
