I’m a Roman Catholic who married a Ruthenian Catholic 35 years ago. Now, my memory is hazy about lots of things, but I know we recited vows (and had the crowning, etc.) They were slightly different from the Roman Catholic vows, but they were vows.

I understand that traditionally the main component of the Byzantine wedding is the crowning and laying on of hands, and have read that the vows were a fairly recent innovation. (I know that in the Roman Catholic Church, it is the couple who marries each other, with the priest as witness, and the Byzantine view is that the sacrament is conferred by the priest.)

I find this difference in theology quite interesting.
