The cathedral where we’re getting married says no strapless dresses for bride or bridesmaids “officially,” but when I talked to the wedding coordinator he said that as long as my veil covers my shoulders with a strapless dress, it’s OK. The FSSP Oratory in town has the exact same rule…

Well, that’s a matter of opinion. Strapless styles may be universally flattering on young, slender women, but I have seen some “fluffy” girls stuffed into them where the result was, shall we say, less than to be desired. I’m with you on the cleavage thing, though.
Same here, except mine was halter, and I didn’t feel it was appropriate to wear it without the jacket for the wedding ceremony (took it off for the reception afterwards

Personally, I refused to wear any sort of dress that required me to wear a strapless bra. This was more about comfort than modesty, since I am a bit on the “fluffy” side myself. Maybe strapless bras are better now than they were back in my day, but in the ‘70’s, they were extremely uncomfortable for anyone bigger than an A or B cup. Lace-covered torture devices they were! I’m just glad that as a musician, I played my flute for all of my friends’ weddings instead of being a bridesmaid! The only bridesmaid’s dress I ever bought was for my brother’s wedding.

Yeah, that was my take on the dresses. The non-strapless and less-constructed ones were definitely cut for smaller-breasted girls. I wear an F-cup in most bra brands, and my dress had so much seaming and boning (not to mention layers of fabric and beading) that I didn’t really need the strapless bra. I wore the bra at my mother’s insistence. then got so fed up with it digging into my ribcage at the reception that I went into the bathroom and took it off. Quite frankly, the dress looked and fit better that way.Most of the strapless bridal gowns I tried on had so much structure in the bodice that I have absolutely no worries about problem areas. (This motivated my ‘universally flattering’ comment–I found them *much *more flattering than many of the other styles I tried on!) I understand concerns about arms and shoulders, but I guess that’s what shrugs are for
And yeah, I wouldn’t classify strapless bras today as torture devices…especially a nice long-line bra will give you plenty of support. And a well-fitting/well-tailored dress should stay up, even without the assistance of tape.
