What was or if you are currently planning a wedding, your wedding entrance song?

My brother who just got married two weeks ago (and is returning from his honey moon tonight!) had the Entrance Song O God Beyond All Praising. That would be my choice as well if I chose today.

Mine was “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”. To this day I give thanks that we had a small church so that the soloist never got to verse 3 because if she had my mother would have fainted.

When I think about my choices I could die of embarrassment. But it was 1975 and I didn’t know any better.

I had the traditional Wedding March from Lohengrin aka “Here Comes the Bride, all Fat and Wide” (<—that’s the lyrics always sung in our family, not the real lyrics 🙂

The pastor at our church permitted couples to choose that.

One time in high school I played the “Trumpet Voluntary” for the entrance hymn at my friend’s sister’s Catholic wedding.

Married in 2002.

We had the Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke (played on the organ). It was the closest thing to what we really wanted, the Fanfare for trumpets, timpani, violins and oboes by Jean-Joseph Mouret, which wasn’t on the list that we had to choose from.

Trumpet Voluntary is often miscredited to Henry Purcell and was so cited in our wedding program. Oops. :roll_eyes:

I think we had “Give Yourself to Love” by Kate Wolf.
That’s what my husband would still want, I know that. It isn’t Catholic, but at least it was written for a wedding and not as dance music for a bar, lol. I think we may have had it right before the processional of the bride and the actual start of the Mass, though, with something instrumental for the start of Mass.

Kind friends all gathered 'round, there’s something I would say:

I heard it as “big, fat, and wide.” The groom enters riding on a broom.

The bridesmaids entered to Sheep May Safely Graze and I entered to Jesu Joy of Man’s desiring.
 
I heard this song was made as a mockery of marriage but has since been used as a traditional opening for years lol.

I think Let Us Go To The Altar or All Who Enter Here for also be good choices

I’d like to have one of two songs for my entrance: Litaniae Sanctorum (Litany of the Saints), or Immaculate Mary. However, I have yet to speak to our musical director and the priest marrying us, about it.
 
You could always use the Entrance Antiphon (Introit) from the Propers. However, if you want to use an entrance hymn, instead, then personally, I would choose something traditional, such as “Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven,” or “O God Beyond All Praising.”

For the offertory hymn, I would use either “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (If you do not use “Alleluia, Sing to Jesus,” as the Communion hymn, but this could work as the entrance hymn, instead),” or “Lord of All Hopefulness/Be Thou My Vision.”

For Communion, I’d use the Communion Antiphon from the Propers, but if I had to select a hymn, then I would choose either “Alleluia, Sing to Jesus (if you didn’t use “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” as either the entrance hymn or the offertory hymn),” or “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.”

For the recessional hymn, again, I’d choose a traditional hymn, such as “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name,” or “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.”

As for a Mass Setting, any of Steven Janco’s Mass Settings (Mass of Wisdom, Mass of Angels and Saints, and Mass of Redemption) are great. Do NOT use Mass of Glory, Mass of Christ the Savior, or Mass of St. Ann. Use Missa de Angelis, if you really want to up the traditional, though.

Stay away from the Haugen/Haas/Schutte nonsense.

Let’s be honest, though. “Here Comes the Bride,” “Canon in D,” and Mendelssohn’s Wedding March are cliche/unoriginal.
 
2 disclaimers.
  1. I know that these are my recommendations, as if I was planning my own wedding Mass. Now, I am not called to the Vocation of Marriage, but in the future, if I am (God forbid it, though), then these would be the hymns that I would select for my wedding Mass.
  2. The reason why I do not recommend singing “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” and “Alleluia, Sing to Jesus,” in the same Mass, is because both of these hymns have the same melody (Hyfrydol).
 
Until Prince William’s wedding I never heard a vocal entrance song.

I think it’s only happened once in my parish and that’s when the then diocesan Cathechesis Coordinator got married in 2000. She and her groom met their guests at the door and went up in the entrance procession. Hadn’t been done before and hasn’t been done since.

The Jupiter Hymn (to which O God Beyond All Praising is set) is quite nice. The trouble for me is that I’ve heard it at so many ordinations, first Masses, and big diocesan events that it’s started to get a bit old for me.
