I am writing this post in regards to a few questions that I have about a wedding that I am planning.
My first question is, Does the acting priest of a perish have a say in how many couples can stand up in a wedding? Is there an allowance? The other question is, can another priest from another parish who is residing in another town come down and marry these individuals or do these individuals have to be married by the priest who resides in the town that they want be be married in?

Welcome to the forums.

Marriage is a Sacrament, as the wedding is the place this Sacrament is celebrated, the Priest is in charge of the Mass (or Nuptual Ceremony).

He may have guidelines for the number of attendants, the decorations and the clothing (check on this BEFORE you buy dresses!)

If you wish to have a Priest from another Parish preside at your wedding, speak to your Pastor and ask him what the policy is. The resident Pastor would need to extend the invitation for a visiting Priest to celebrate/con-celebrate.

These are questions I will need to ask my priest as well for my wedding…So the best thing you can do and should do is speak with your priest and see what he advices you! Good luck and welcome to the forum…

These are types of question typically covered when you come to the parish for your wedding preparation. You will probably have an interview with the priest or deacon, or whomever they delegate, and they will give you the guidelines. This may be at the residential parish of either the bride or the groom.

In general, a priest has sole control over Mass and sacraments he celebrates, and the pastor has sole control over Mass and sacraments celebrated in his parish.

Yes you can ask a priest or deacon from outside the parish or diocese to witness the marriage, but he must get permission from your pastor, and from the bishop is he is out of the diocese. Two witnesses are required. You can have as many people as you want for attendants, but two people will sign the certificate as witnesses.

for all other aspects–from serious matters such as dispensations if needed, to flowers and music, see your parish and don’t delay, most require a minimum of 6 to 12 months before the date of the wedding.

You can have a priest from a different parish marry you, but the priest from the parish you are marrying in has to give his permission for the visiting priest to come and do the wedding. I ran into this with my own wedding - the pastor of my parish initially refused to give me permission to have the priest I wanted, who was from another parish. It was a long complicated story and the pastor was known to be somewhat territorial. I doubt anyone else would run into a problem like that. He did end up giving us the OK so it all worked out in the end.

I’m not sure what you mean by “how many couples stand up.” Are you talking about the number of attendants you are permitted? Talk to your pastor, he generally has the final say in such things. (Personally, I would keep my wedding party small just for sanity’s sake. I have seen parties with 12 or more bridesmaids and I can’t imagine what a headache that must be.)
