Interesting! I wonder if our perspectives differ coming from either side of the piece - mine from the instrumentalist side and yours from the vocalist side.
I haven’t been invited to too many weddings recently (none, actually) but most of the weddings I’ve witnessed, even on youtube, have been for the most part instrumental, and many included Trumpet Voluntary by Clarke or Trumpet Tune by Purcell among other organ favorites.

But things may have changed in recent years.

ever heard the ave maria by franz biebl? we had our organist play a bit of it as an instrumental. it’s one of my favorite vocal pieces, actually.

we also had the middle (slow) theme from holst’s jupiter.

that’s all I remember off the top of my head - I’m pretty sure I still have the word doc floating around somewhere, but it’s not on this computer. if I find it, I’ll post again 🙂

(also, not sure if you’ve thought about this, but we put together a cd with mp3s of music for the dj’s to choose from - no way were we paying several hundred bucks for some dudes to play awful popular dance music that we didn’t like.)

found it! not in any particular order:

instrumental [ave maria (biebl), wachet auf (bwv 645, bach), jupiter theme (holst)]
hymns [how great thou art, alleluia sing to jesus, blessed are they]

I probably would have chosen different hymns if I knew more of the traditional ones that I know now, but there it is.

we also used the less commonly chosen options for readings, or picked some outside what was listed in the booklet (with permission/approval of the priest, of course). so yeah, no reading from genesis and no canon in d 😉

just wondering… if you don’t have a music director, who will be doing the music for you? do you have to hire someone? does your church have an organ or piano?
