Too many rules!!! I can see how you rather intelligent folks can understand and comprehend things like this. But people as a general rule are not all that bright to understand the nuances of canon law. Most can’t even do their own taxes. All of us are pretty under-educated in our faith.
In my case, no one in my wife’s family gets along; we didn’t think getting them in one room together would be a good idea. I didn’t know about all these ‘rules’ and such…we did pre-cana cause we knew we had to do that, but nothing was said to us regarding marriage venues. I wasn’t ‘hardcore’ catholic back then, but knew about getting a marriage ‘blessed’. So we told the priest our situation, said he understood, and we got married via a justice of peace in the Virgin Islands. It was a great experience, we will always remember and treasure those moments. We did live as man and wife after the ceremony, and therefore were sinning, but we didn’t know. We had our marriage ‘convalidated’ when we got back. I don’t think we even went to confession beforehand. Didn’t think/know it was a mortal sin (we were both were cradle catholics). We later have come back to the church, trying our best to live by her teachings, even though we don’t agree with all of them.
My point is, with all the black and white rules, where’s the compassion? The above poster made some nice points about venues and has me thinking…
