Is one’s wedding ring supposed to be blessed?

I actually don’t wear mine all the time because of the work I do. I’m a little paranoid about jewelry to begin with.

But the question to the apologist made me wonder if i was doing the wrong thing?

Thanks!

Our rings were also blessed, during our ceremony. I assumed this was part of every Catholic wedding, but maybe not?

I returned to the Church after I marred, so I suppose that’s why I missed that part !

You can ask your priest to bless your rings since it seems he did not do so during your convalidation. But, no it is not necessary that your rings be blessed, nor is it necessary to have rings or wear rings.

Your Priest can bless both your and your husband’s rings (if he wears one-- a lot of men don’t). I had to remove mine when assisting in surgery (no metal objects allowed in the OR), but kept it in a locked locker, then put it on again after the surgeries. I still wear mine, and my husband was buried with his ring and his crucifix necklace. (Both blessed). I will probably wear mine until I die and be buried with it as well as my Crucifix and Miraculous Medal. I take off the medals at night, as the chain rubs my neck badly, but rarely take off my ring. I’m thinking of having it sized up 1/4 or 1/2 mm to fit my right hand, as when I grew up, widows moved their wedding band to their right hands. But I will still wear it, regardless. It is blessed, and precious to me – plain yellow gold, no diamonds or anything.

You can get your ring blessed, but you don’t have to. Similarly, you don’t have to wear it, especially if you’re in a line of work that could make it irritating or dangerous.

My DH loathes wearing his, not out of some negative sentiment, but because he just hates having things on his hands. (He never wears a watch, either.) However, he wears it because he knows it means a lot to me to see him wear it. If it meant more to him to not wear it than it did to me to have him wear it, I’d know that he’d still be perfectly faithful.

I know many happily married people who take their rings off when their work requires it. One fellow I know has a chain for wearing his wedding band around his neck during the day, inside his clothing, since he could lose a finger too easily by having the ring on his finger at work. I’d be too worried the chain would break while I was working, and I wouldn’t notice when the ring was lost. I’d just leave it at home.

You can get a stainless steel chain to put it on. However, in some types of work, both a neck chain and a ring can be either dangerous or prohibited. A ring can catch, for instance, on the back of a stake bed truck (saw a man in ER who had this happen and he lost his ring finger completely). A chain around the neck, under clothing is usually safe for outside work in winter, but could dangle and catch on something during warmer months when shirt collars are worn open. If in a line of work where rings or chains are not permitted, they can be left safely at home. Some men put them in their wallets, and women in their purses, but those could be stolen. If not able to wear at work, leave at home and wear the ring at home or on days off and for Church.

Thanks everyone 🙂 I had no idea about the blessing of the rings! That’s really very nice!
