at a TLM (High mass) wedding, does a father walk his daughter down the aisle, or does she go by herself? Someone had said it doesn’t happen at a Latin Mass wedding. If it’s not normal, is it an “abuse” to do anyway?

First off, the Ordinary Form can be celebrated in Latin, so the term “Latin Mass” is at least ambiguous. If you mean the Tridentine Mass, the proper term, preferred by the Pope himself, is Extraordinary Form.

For your particular question, why don’t you ask a priest who normally, or at least frequently, celebrates the Extraordinary Form?

I was married in November and we had a choice of both the Extraordinary form or the Ordinary form of the vows. The way we were told, things like having the father give the daighter away were totally optional and not in the rubrics. So, seemed like it was just up to us basically. But it wasn’t going to be something that the priest was going to initiate, if that makes sense.

I think a lot of things, in the end, are sort of cultural add-ons and aren’t necessarily restricted from a Catholic wedding as long as the vows are in place and not messed with. We personally just had a very small wedding, with the blessing and exchange of vows. My husband and I had thought that things were a little more strict I guess than they ended up being. We had seen the vows and thought that was going to be it. But then at the end the priest sprung the “you may now kiss the bride” thing on us, which we weren’t prepared for at all. We were trying to leave the sanctuary when he said that, so it was kind of awkward lol. 😊

I was an “altar boy” (as we were called then) from the mid-50’s to the mid-60’s, and served at a great many weddings in the Tridentine (Latin, pre-V II) Mass. (Loved those white envelopes…). In every case the father walked the bride down the aisle. I believe the wedding liturgy doesn’t technically begin until the wedding party is at the altar anyway. The prior poster is correct in that I believe the Church allows for various regional and cultural customs that are external to the liturgy itself. The idea that a father walking his daughter down the aisle is somehow a “liturgical abuse” seems to me to be beyond the pale.

I fairly sure it is totally normal and allowed.

In the TLM the wedding ceremony actually happens before the Mass begins, not in the middle, as in the ordinary form/Novus Ordo. So, the rubrics of the Mass will not cover such things.

God Bless
