Can someone explain Deuteronomy 23:2 where it seems to suggest that if one is born out of wedlock theyy’re dammed?

Also, why is eating shellfish an abomination in Leviticus 11:10-12?

I think you meant Deut 23:3, not Deut. 23:2  I think your interpretation of the “community of the Lord” is off. It doesn’t mean they are damned, it just means they aren’t Jewish, in my very naive interpretation. It doesn’t apply to anything in the New Covenant. That law has been placed aside.

Because God says so! But again, all food is made clean in the New Covenant.

Hi Find,

Many of the food customs of the desert peoples were incorporated into the law of Israel. There were originally hygienic reasons for this. For example eating pork could give you trichinellosis. And,as you know, shell fish that is not fresh can be very dangerous.

After these food customs became part of biblical law, they were, in addition to fostering the health of the people, a sign of faithfulness to the covenant with God.

Some foods are tempting because they’re energy-packed. As such, the pagans often treated ham, oysters and other “unclean” animal foods as special luxuries, delicacies. These foods are also full of parasites, because such creatures eat stuff cows won’t touch. The Levitical law is there to draw a line between what merely sounds good and what is actually healthy. It’s a symbol of respect for life and self-control, a division between danger and the community. They had to learn to respect their bodies in order to understand how to respect the soul. It was all to prepare the way for Christ, who fulfilled the law that preserved life because He is the Life. Now all food is clean.
