When you post the readings, what are you asking?
I like to say whatever strikes me about the day’s readings, but is that what you’re
asking?
“judgment is stern for the exalted–
For the lowly may be pardoned out of mercy”
– Or in the translation of my missal, “Ruthless judgement is reserved for the
high and mighty; the lowly will be compassionately pardoned.”
So then if we see someone high and mighty, and think, “well, they will be
judged, while I will be pardoned because I’m lowlier”. Then maybe that thought
just made us high and mighty. Remember, it said the lowly MAY be pardoned
out of mercy. Not just the one who THINKS they are lowly. The high and the
mighty can turn and be lowly in an instant, then what of the lowly one who became
high and mighty in their thoughts?
“I said: “You are gods,
all of you sons of the Most High;
yet like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.””
– Here it seems like God tried to make people high and mighty in their thinking,
then tried to humble them, as Jesus humbled Himself.
“Go show yourselves to the priests.”
– This line strikes me today because it reminds me of confession. We go and
show ourselves to the priests, in hopes of being declared clean. Sometimes
it seems as if in the decision itself, we are purified along the way.
