I had a question for you all, personally myself I don’t touch any form of intoxication, I’ve had many drug addicts and alcoholics (which i consider the same as a drug addict) in my family and I’m deathly scared of the same fate.

Though I have met many people throughout my life who could handle addiction. I’ve met people who smoke speed or crack cocaine on a daily basis, and yet still are able to lead productive lives without letting the drug get the best of them (some of these people had been doing the drug for years and years and a conversation with them would be just as intelligent as a conversation with you or I). I still believe that even though the only negative effect is probably on their organs (these people were so smart that if they had lost intelligence due to prolonged drug use they would’ve had to make Einstein look dumb), doing man made drugs like that is immoral. It isn’t godly. Marijuana on the other hand, confuses me.

There’s no doubt that marijuana has ruined lives. There is no doubt that marijuana kills brain cells. But marijuana is nothing more then a plant that grows on its on. While cocaine’s main ingredient is a plant as well, that’s not all there is in it. But if you have a weed plant and you know nobody is lacing it with anything to mask it’s smell or add to its weight (or just to be a jerk), is it bad? What is Jesus’s view on pot? I’ve learned many places that alcohol is much worse for you if abused then marijuana (some could even argue that its worse for you then heroin due to the fact alcohol is the only drug that can kill you from withdrawls), so how could he be totally against it. Does God have the same view on someone who smokes a little pot every three months or so that he has on an individual that drinks in excess every three months or so? And if he doesn’t, why? Thanks in advance for your answers.
 
I just wanted to add, just to avoid confusion, in some of America’s great states, marijuana is illegal, but it is only a misdemeanor if you have under an ounce, which from what i understand is a lot. Actually the Cheif of Police in Humbolt County, CA told his offiecers that even though the state and the federal governments consider it illegal, he does not want them bothering weed smokers. The Governor at the time knew about this and did nothing, thought it was no big deal. Also, I’ve never heard of anyone in Oregon (where I live now) getting their weed taken from a police officer.
So yes, it is illegal, and I know it is a sin to break the law, but I jaywalk every now and then too and I’d get a bigger ticket for that then for possessing smoke.
 
Your question is not uncommon, my friend.

First of all, it’s great that you are wondering about. I’ll try and address your issues one at a time.
  1. Is smoking weed wors than getting drunk every few months or so? no, it’s not. sin is sin. It’s all bad in God’s eyes and any small sin is enough to damn us (that’s why we need Jeuse). Remember that God is HOLY and PERFECT and nothing unholy can enter into his presenc. But, that’s why we have Jesus. because we mess up. I’m smoked Marajuana before, but I have quit and confessed my sin.
  2. why is it wrong? Jesus said that we have to obay the laws of the land in which we live, so long as they don’t defy the laws of God. (for example, abortion is mandatory after two children in China, but a Chineese Christian would have to disobay that law)
  3. Jaywalking vs. smoking pot. Okay, so you are right that you would get a bigger ticket for jaywalking than for posession of weed. one example of how backwards our laws are. BUT, even with jaywalking, you are commiting a sin because you’re disobaying the law. remember that that law (like the speeding laws and other traffic laws) were put into place for the safty of everyone on the road. suppose you j-walked and got hit by a car because they weren’t expecting a podestrian to be there, so you whoudl share in the fault of the accident. is it a sin to not use your turn signal? seems silly, but we have to look at it through God’s eyes, not our own small sphere of life.
  4. drinking vs. smoking. Yes, do not drink to access, the Bible speaks of getting drunk. I can’t remember the spasific scriptures, but it’s in there a lot. Now, what about weed? it’s ilegal. just because it might not be as harmful as drinking, infact, it could be the best thing for you, but Jesus said we have to obay the law. weather we like it or not. is it againts our faith to NOT smoke weed? I don’t think so.
I hope this clears some of it up for you. I’ve had this discussion with people before (people trying to make me understand why I shouldn’t be smoking pot). Thank God for HIs mercy and His forgivness!
 
Marijuana causes infertility if used regularly. I don’t know if it’s temporary or permanent, but the more you smoke, the worse it
is. Hormone suppresion, maybe? It also decreases the use of free will, much the same way as alcohol does, but with much less amounts used to achieve that effect. Also, it is against the law. I always knew it was wrong, but could never figure out why. I supppose the same rules apply as does alcohol, except that it is against the law. I don’t think it’s necessarily a mortal sin, though, I suppose it could be. Plus, it puts you in the vicinity of a lot of immoral people. I don’t know what it is about it, but it seems to attract a lot of bad people.
 
I am not saying break the law, although perhaps for some medical use. I am not saying marijuana is a ‘gateway drug’, although the issue is debatable. What I will say is why open yourself to temptation? Even if it is not a sin, I can almost gaurantee you that after a while, smoking grass every three months or so, you will decide that “hey, this doesn’t hurt, it’s ok, why not once a month.” Than once a week. Then “well, this other drug is ‘natural’ and presumably harmless–let’s try it”. When you make a small hole in your defenses to allow something, the hole gets bigger and bigger, until possibly the whole wall comes down. I was a drug addict for 5-6 years–heroin and speed(meth). I quit and went to drinking because it was legal and cheaper. I have been an alcoholic for thirty years, been dry about two years now (I had other dry periods) since my last bout. Yes, God saved me, but I will not tempt him again by trying to use marijuana–Hey, I know what will happen as it did a few times before. My defenses will come down and I’ll be drunk before I know it.
Now I have a good loving personal friendship with God, it is more important to me than life itself. I don’t need a ‘buzz’, I need God. I don’t need a drink, I need God. If you think you need something other than God in your life, think again. Develop a closer relationship with him and those needs will pass. God bless you and keep you,–nicolo
 
well as far as medical needs go, I can tell you because I have glacoma which is what weed is supposed to help, that traditional medicine is much more helpful (and cheeper) than smoking pot. it doesn’t damage the longues either. so that whole arguement about weed being good for glacoma is junk.

congradulations on your sobriety! and you are right, why not get high off the Lord? there is no come down either! no headach or hangover! the Jesus buzz is better than anything! When I get to praising the Lord, it’s so much better than ANYTHING!!! and then if I’m at a Mass where the music is especially powerful during Holy Communion, I’ve had a couple of times where I almost fainted infront of the Eukerest because I was so “high”!

you ever been slain in the spirt? that’s WAY better than drugs! Go to a charasmatic worship group. especially one that has the Eucharest exposed! oh, it’s so wonderful. I’m going tomorrow (I haven’t been in a couple of months) and I can’t WATE to get there!!! I love adoration!

I have never smoked pot, but I was always under the impression that it created a condition similar (but not the same) as drinking to excess. That condition impairs your free will and that is where sin comes into play.

I would like to note about the frequent arguments I see about breaking man made laws… Breaking just laws can easily be a sin… no argument there. The reason it is a sin is because it is done out of pride. The person basically exclaims: “I am greater than this just law, and all those who are required to follow it.”… Breaking just laws is a sin of pride. Breaking laws tends to be imperfections or at most venial sins… granted that the action itself is morally “neutral”.
