If I hide and do not go with my parish then I am not doing my job. My parish highly supports the event and catechists are invited so I should participate. I just go somewhere else for Mass when I am there.

Don’t worry this kind of rot is in many dioceses, but the Church has stood for 2000 years and the gates of hell wont prevail against it. It might look bad, but it will prevail.

Why not write to the Holy See, specifically the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith? Given the fact that the programs are questionable, they need to know. Apathy is the devil’s best tool.

Others have, I will try and do so also, thank you for the advice. Yet, there does need to be publicity on the web, etc, of this sort of thing or else it will be accepted as normal.

I will put in my objections to my diocese, then if I do not get a proper response send it on up. I am not part of the Diocese of LA but this program is supported by my Diocese which is nearby. So I think it is proper for me to go local first, then on up the chain of command.

I’m still on a high this morning from an absolutely wonderful, spiritual, uplifting weekend in Anaheim.

I attended several workshops dealing with aspects of RCIA:
1-25 - Celebrating the Rites of Initiation (Fr. Paul Turner)
4-24 - How Catechumens Become Disciples (Jim Schellman)
7-21 - Beyond a Nine-Month Catechumenate (Jim Schellman)

They were excellent and I came away with ideas that I want to implement in our RCIA program.

Two of my other sessions were so filling and fulfilling, especially for my Benedictine soul. They were with Abbot Christopher Jamison from Worth Abbey in England:
2-10 - Finding Sanctuary: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life
5-10 - Finding Happiness: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life

He was an excellent speaker and now I’m looking forward to reading his books.

I also came away with a number of books from the exhibit area. It’s a great opportunity to be able to browse through books you’ll never see at your local Barnes and Noble. Lots of the publishers give good discounts as well so that’s really nice.

And in the Masses I had a chance to pray with people who are absolutely on fire with their faith. The Spirit is truly moving through the attendees.

Congress is so vast that you can find whatever it is you’re looking for.

Catholic Morality Challenges

This was on Sunday Morning before I left to go to Mass.

It was quite different as it was faithful and helped me out quite a bit. He outlined the difficulties of Catholic morality in this culture of ours, how we must learn theology to support it but not as the only reason, as our heart must also be aligned with the faith.

Spirituality goes hand in hand with Theology.
It was quite a good talk which also pointed out the false dichotomy between Catholic social justice and morality. This is something I noticed in the other talk attacking the Church and talking about social justice.
I highly recommend seeking this Priest in the future and supporting him.
Here is an article by him, I just looked up his name of Google and judging by the content of his presentation I will recommend to read this article without even looking it over.
I would not do this with 70% of the other speakers at congress, lest I risk leading others astray.

If you are a faithful Catholic who seeks topics according to your needs you probably can have a great chance to find many good faithful presenters at Congress. It is a mix there between faithful Catholic presenters and outright enemies of the faith.

I know your fear. I was Episcopalian too and have had the same trauma. But remember, we have the Catechism as a solid statement of our faith, and we have a strong Holy Father, and we have the promise of Jesus Christ. Be not afraid!

glad to know that you understand how i feel.

i am new to my community and this parish and i have only been Catholic since last July, so i haven’t had a chance yet to get a feel of what kind of priests i have yet. the priests at the church i was confirmed at were very conservative and traditional and grounded in their faith.

so i was concerned when i read the article and knew that one of these priests had been recommended to attend.

i think writing the Holy See is an excellent idea. as another poster wrote - apathy is not good or complacency.

i would certainly hope so. as i said, this is bringing flashbacks of what i saw in the episcopal church.

I think that people who are looking for things to fill them spiritually will find them.

I think that people who are looking for skills, techniques, or knowledge to help them become better religious educators will find them.

I think that people who are looking for things to criticize will find them.

I think that people who are looking for reasons to be angry will find them.

As I said, Congress is so vast that you will undoubtedly find whatever you are looking for.

If I am looking for people who seek to subvert the faith from within and give advice on how to do so, they are openly presenting.
If I am looking for non-catholics who make jokes about the Catholic faith presenting, I will find them. Yes we can find some faithful presenters, I went to some faithful presentations.

There is one thing I cannot find at Congress, and I haven’t found it the last 3 years I have attended…

That is a unified, faithful presentation of the faith, which I can find at hundreds of other Catholic gatherings.

Don’t we deserve a faithful gathering? We are Catholic we should strive for a faithful presentation of the faith. I cannot ignore dissent and call Congress good, when there is so much against the faith there. In my love of Christ I must defend Him and expose betrayal of the faith when they exist.

Do you think everything at Congress is good? I do agree that there are faithful presenters there. Just because there is some faithfulness, does that mean we ignore those who are catering to itchy ears?

an excellent post. very well written. my point exactly. i was thinking of that last night. is it right for there to be something for everyone? we SHOULD be unified in one faith and the interpretation of that faith. does this mean there was something for people who support female priests? married priests?
no more annulments? this is where you have to be careful. once you open the door,
it is hard to close it again. the Catholic church has been in existence for over 2000 years and i trust the church will continue to guide us in our faith and not allow what happened in the episcopal church which has been very painful for so many. thank you for your thoughtful and well put post!

Cardinal Mahony seems to be a strong advocate of the Fairness Doctrine.
