Weekly Church Going

Hello all, and God Bless. I was just wondering if anyone here went to Church not for Mass during the week, but just to sit and pray? I want to do this, but would like to know if its a common practice. Thank you, God Bless.

I do sometimes when I have opportunity, but if there is a mass, I prefer to spend the time attending mass.

As long as the church isn’t locked, that’s fine. It’s especially fine to sit before the Tabernacle, if it’s in the main church or a side chapel. However, you might want to look into going to a parish that has perpetual adoration, in which the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration 24/7 or at least for certain hours of the day. You can sit and pray before Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament for as long as you like.

Hi, Jacob - this is a very common practice and a very excellent way to foster our closeness to God. In the life of St. John Vianney, he relates speaking with an elderly man, a parisioner of his, and asking about what he while sitting in the church: “I look at Him and He looks at me.”

no our church is locked during the day because we are right downtown and we would have to hire full time security guards to keep it open. There is a small chapel next to the rectory where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved, and I generally spend at least a few minutes there every day. For adoration and my hour of prayer I prefer to go to our neighboring parish where the church is open all day (yes they do hire a security company), because here I am likely to be interrupted during my prayer time. I try to do in the morning, if I wait until evening I am usually too tired. But if I wake in the middle of the night, I drive to the next town where there is a perpetual adoration chapel (now that construction is done and drive is safer). I go on business to the Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle at least once a week, so always drop in there, for Mass if I time it right, or at least to visit the Blessed Sacrament, or walk the outdoor stations.
 
My office use to be located about a mile from a Church, which had an adoration chapel off to the side. I would go for my lunchtime walk and stop in for about 15 minutes.

I usually do go into the chapel to pray after Mass. In my parish, we hold Mass in one section and have a chapel on the other side. So, I head over there to pray after Mass. It is a great place to pray.
 
I do every day…but it is easy for me because all I have to do is walk upstairs to get to the church from my office. 😉
 
Sometimes, if I happen to be in the neighbourhood of a church or chapel with a few minutes to kill. I do prefer to go to Mass when I can, though. Often as not I will see other people there too, so it’s not like you or I are the only ones 🙂
 
Our Church is locked during the day, and if it were open, my old legs would not walk the distance anymore from my home. I have an oratory here in Bethany and spend time there. Blessings in this Seventh week of Easter - Pentecost next Sunday - Barb:)
 
Absolutely yes, if your church is open, go for it! I spend time with Jesus in the Tabernacle on many Sundays, after the Masses for the day are done. That time with Him is just precious to me (as is the Mass, certainly). 🙂
