Why does the world need one single ‘policeman’? And what ‘law’ is this ‘policeman’ to enforce? And is this ‘policing’ to be done by consent?Let’s say that the U.S. decided to quit being the World’s superpower “police force”.
Would you be more comfortable with Russia or China taking over the job?
Yes the US has a role to play, but let’s not kid ourselves that the US acts out of predominantly altruistic motives rather than self interest. The US has the military capability to do this, where many of her ‘allies’ do not.
Yes, I do think the USA is right to engage in air-strike right now, but if it US interests were not being threatened the US would not be engaging in this action.
And let’s not forget that the previous Gulf War was not approved of by most of the Us’s allies of the international community, so the US cannot claim to have been acting as the world’s ‘policeman’ then.
It’s not as simple as viewing the US as being the world’s ‘policeman’ who acts to sort out the world’s problems. Much of the world (including her allies at times) views the USA as being a significant contributor to many of the world’s problems.
In the end countries, including the USA, act to protect their own interests through using what resources and capabilities they have at their disposal. The USA is no different than other nations in that regard.
Would I rather have a world dominated by Russia or China than by the USA? Absolutely not. But do I think the USA is motivated by a desire to make the world a better place? No.I’d view the USA as most definitely being the lesser of three evils when compared to Russia or China.
I also think that (unlike the previous Gulf wars) what the USA is doing in Iraq right now is correct.
