Noted Catholic scholar and commentator George Weigel has reacted to strongly to Time Magazine’s recent 10-page spread criticizing the Catholic Church as “nonsense,” and has offered counter points to several accusations the magazine raised.

Good show, George 👍

We would know that the Holy Father had walked on water if the New York Times and Time Magazine raced each other to get out the scoop, “Pope Can’t Swim.”

Blessings,

Gerry

I am beginning to realize that as major media outlets pass into the hands of a younger and less experienced generation, a less disciplined mindset reveals itself. On the other hand, TIME cannot afford to be too scholarly, as the media has also conditioned a younger generation to absorb news and commentary in small bites.

A subject should be understood in depth before it can be critically examined. The United States will be poorer for such sloppy or biased scholarship. Things worth knowing are worth knowing, and I think extra work in separating fact from fiction must be the goal of each Catholic who looks at what the media has to say today, especially about the Church.

God bless,
Ed

I gave up reading Time and Newsweek long ago when it became apparent that they were no longer news magazines but opinion journals.

This is considered a great defense?

" On the claim that the recently surfaced clerical abuse scandals have been responsible for emptying Churches in Western Europe, Weigel remarked that “Irish, German, and Austrian churches were empty long before Scandal Time II exploded several months ago; indeed, those churches had been emptying for decades.”

I don’t think I’d want that guy defending me.

That statement is not a defense, it’s a factual statement that is made in an attempt at discrediting the writer of the original story by showing his lack of knowledge on the subject.

The truth would be refreshing and helpful. But, the MSM drives the Church-bashing, because it can’t stand opposition. Journalists are not scientists, so I guess we can’t expect more.
