I have started the Body For Life challenge, I don’t know if anyone has heard of it, but it’s basically a way of losing some weight by changing your eating habits and exercising. I read the book and really liked the program and figured it’s one plan I can follow for the rest of my life.

Anyway, I’ve read a few threads where people have mentioned that they are trying to lose some extra pounds:crying:…aren’t we all:o, and I thought maybe a thread where we can discuss and support our efforts would be helpful.

I certainly would like a place to be able to post my struggles, frustrations and, most importantly, my successes!!! Also, a place to get ideas, recipes, workout plans, etc. What do you all think?

I think it sounds like a very good idea 🙂 I’m trying to lose weight, once again, and for the first time in my life I’m approaching the cutbacks in my diet in terms of “offering it up”, for family happiness and peace and security, rather than, “it’ll make me fat”. I hope it does the trick - I always start out well and then binge.

I want to lose about 16 kilos by the new year, so roughly 2lbs a week. 10 of those kilos are from going on Paxil 2 years ago, and I haven’t been able to shake them off, and the last 6 are from an extremely stressfull last 6 months or so. It’s terribly depressing to me, as I was always able to lose gained weight before, and now no matter how well I eat, or how active I am, it won’t budge. Of course, DH went through the same stress, and of course lost weight - I weigh 2 kg more than him and he’s waaay taller than I am. 😦

I have health issues that keep me from strenuous exercise, but I want to take up my yoga again, and try to take a daily walk around the block at least. I’m not obese, but have problems with insulin resistance, and have just reached ‘overweight’ on the BMI calculator. I want to look better in my clothes, of course, but mostly just want to feel better, be kinder to my knees and back (got little bird bones and a tiny frame, yet DDD’s

I’ve tried this before on secular message boards, and gotten nowhere, but am hoping this is more successful, even though I’m just dipping my toe in the God waters right now 😃

What a fantastic idea Lexee. Everyone who is losing weight needs support and encouragement as it is so difficult at times to stick with a diet and exercise. I need to lose about 20 pounds so when I saw your post I was delighted. It’s always a help to know there are other people out there in the same position.🙂

I have been fighting a losing battle for years. I would be happy with a consistent 1-2 lb weekly loss. But alas, I have about 50 lbs velcroed to my hips and stomach. However, I do manage to walk 9-11 miles a day ( I am in the health care filed, so it’s easy).
I’ll not give up trying.
Kathy

I have worked in the same field, before, since I am a certified nurses aide. 🙂 So I know what ya mean about a lot of walking! 😉

First, I’m glad you’re “dipping your toe in the God waters!” He loves you!

Second, I’m with you on losing weight. I’d like to lose about 70 lbs., but I’d settle for 40! :o

I just wanted to share with you that yoga, while sometimes helpful, can also be dangerous. Here’s what This Rock (the magazine from Catholic Answers) said:

*Q: For several months our parish bulletin has included this announcement: “Introduction to yoga for beginning, intermediate, and advanced Hatha yoga, and Iyengar techniques for your wellness and stress relief. Your teacher has found yoga to be a tool for healing for the body, mind, and spirit.” Is this acceptable and should it be published in a church bulletin?

A: Particular physical exercises that are common to yoga and that help improve one’s health are perfectly fine. The problem is when a Christian participates in non-Christian Eastern spirituality. If your church is sponsoring an exercise class, it should call it simply an exercise class and omit confusing and possibly scandalous terminology such as yoga. If the church is sponsoring classes in non-Christian Eastern spirituality, that is a serious problem that should be discussed with the pastor. *

I just thought you should know that yoga isn’t the best idea, and that there are other things you can do for the same benefit. 🙂

Thank you very much for the kind-hearted advice, and I will do more reading on the subject 🙂 Currently though, I am not Christian (though I believe in Christ’s basic teachings as a philosophy) and personally hold many eastern spiritual beliefs, try to practice them often, and find them to be, well, awesome and fulfilling. But I’m always happy to learn more and keep an open mind 🙂

Does the RCC teach anything about Pilates? Is it acceptable to members?

I’m currently working on getting this pregnancy weight off. I gained 50-60 lbs. and hadn’t loss A POUND since the initial PP weightloss right after the birth. How frustrating! I started Atkins in June at about 172 lbs. and I’m now down to about 157. Not too bad, but I probably would have lost more if I hadn’t gotten off the Atkins track a couple times along the way.

Atkins is the only diet that has ever worked for me. I have a terrible problem with sugar cravings and Atkins completely eliminates my cravings for junk food (which makes it a lot easier to stick with it) and I have so much more energy. And of course, the immediate weightloss keeps me motivated. 👍

I’m not an expert, but based on what I read, it’s very similar and I would be hesitant about it. I don’t usually use Wikipedia, but it had the most concise description I could find:

*Principles

Pilates claimed his method has a philosophical and theoretical foundation. It claims not merely to be a collection of exercises but a method developed and refined over more than eighty years of use and observation. One interpretation of Pilates Principles: Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breathing, and Flowing Movement, similar to yoga.
[edit]Mind over matter
According to practitioners, the central element of Pilates is to create a fusion of mind and body, so that without thinking about it the body will move with economy, grace, and balance; using one’s body to the greatest advantage, making the most of its strengths, counteracting its weaknesses, and correcting its imbalances. The goal is to produce an attention-free union of mind and body, the method requires that one constantly pays attention to one’s body while doing the movements. Paying attention to movement is so vital that it is more important than any other single aspect of the movements or the method.

I would just caution you, and anyone, to carefully consider the following before starting a yoga or Pilates regimen.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church has this to say regarding meditation:

*II. MEDITATION
2705 Meditation is above all a quest. The mind seeks to understand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking. The required attentiveness is difficult to sustain. We are usually helped by books, and Christians do not want for them: the Sacred Scriptures, particularly the Gospels, holy icons, liturgical texts of the day or season, writings of the spiritual fathers, works of spirituality, the great book of creation, and that of history the page on which the “today” of God is written.

2706 To meditate on what we read helps us to make it our own by confronting it with ourselves. Here, another book is opened: the book of life. We pass from thoughts to reality. To the extent that we are humble and faithful, we discover in meditation the movements that stir the heart and we are able to discern them. It is a question of acting truthfully in order to come into the light: “Lord, what do you want me to do?”

2707 There are as many and varied methods of meditation as there are spiritual masters. Christians owe it to themselves to develop the desire to meditate regularly, lest they come to resemble the three first kinds of soil in the parable of the sower.5 But a method is only a guide; the important thing is to advance, with the Holy Spirit, along the one way of prayer: Christ Jesus.

2708 Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ. Christian prayer tries above all to meditate on the mysteries of Christ, as in lectio divina or the rosary. This form of prayerful reflection is of great value, but Christian prayer should go further: to the knowledge of the love of the Lord Jesus, to union with him.

2724 Contemplative prayer is the simple expression of the mystery of prayer. It is a gaze of faith fixed on Jesus, an attentiveness to the Word of God, a silent love. It achieves real union with the prayer of Christ to the extent that it makes us share in his mystery.*

If you are meditating (as in yoga), your focus isn’t on God, and that’s one of the reasons it can be dangerous. You can open yourself up to things other than God, which we shouldn’t do.

God bless, and hopefully we can all lose some weight and celebrate here together! 😃

I had morning sickness my entire pregnancy (was getting sick when my water broke!) so I hardly gained any weight. But after she was born, I felt great and could finally eat again, and boy did I! Since my daughter was born (she’s 19 months old) I’ve gained so much weight…
I did Atkins a few years ago and it helped. Maybe I’ll try that again. In my case I KNOW I need to get active. I sit at a desk all day 😦 so that’s not good. It’s just tough b/c I’m out of the house around 7 a.m., not home until 6 p.m., want time with my daughter and husband, and by the time I could work out it’s time for bed!! I guess I just have to make it a priority…

I had the same problem with nausea. It was BAD. But I still gained weight. Even when I was vomiting all day, I still gained weight.

Pilates and Yoga excerise are okay. They are great for strecthing the muscles and toning and strength your core muscle (stomach, back and abs). I’ve watched a few pilates video’s and have never heard them talking about anything spiritual. Normal it’s hold this position for this amount of time. I don’t see how anyone could mediate while doing these excerises, you are to contrated on trying to make sure your doing it right.

I love this thread. I lost about 45 lbs 2 years ago and have been steady for awhile. i joined weight watchers because i need to learn to eat healthy again. i have had to re-train my body into learning what a portion is. Things that i thought were “healthy” turn out not to be. It explains while even though i was going to the gym i wasn’t losing anything. I’ve recently started getting back to making a point to excerise. This week is going to be crazy but by next week i should have a normal schuedle.

Yoga is not OK, unless you divorce the philosophy from the physical exercise, which is difficult. Here’s are a few links that explain better than I can:

There are so many types of exercises out there – we can choose to take care of our bodies without engaging in eastern-religious exercises that tell us “we” are each divine and that’s it. Just because something is popular in society doesn’t mean it’s OK.

Perhaps someone who is very strong in their Catholic faith can do yoga without believing its teachings regarding the divine, but those without such a faith foundation may not be able to, thus it is best to stay away from it altogether, especially when there are so many other things available that are not questionable.

I love Weight Watchers. I’m pregnant now so I am not interested on losing weigt (maybe just watching I don’t overdo the weight gain haha 😉 ) but I did weight watchers when I gained a few extra in college and it really helped to learn what to watch for, healthy eating, and portion sizes. To me it seems like one of the most “natural” balanced approaches out there. About Atkins, I’d say be careful. A friend of the family ended up with a messed up metabolism after going on it. I like going back to pre-pregnancy/wedding day weight after having a baby so I will probably join you guys in a couple of months 🙂

Congrats on your pregnancy! Whenever anyone asks when we’re having another one, I just say, “30 pounds from now!” 😃 😛

Thanks! Lol, that method would not work for me, I am not always the best dieter. I just tell myself “you better lose that weight before you get pregnant again” 🙂 I will admit that last time I didn’t lose the last few pounds until I had morning sickness :o
