I have a co-worker who’s son’s father just past away last weekend and the funeral’s today. She’s very quiet and private and I don’t think any of us had any idea that this man had been living with her, much less that he’d been dealing with cancer. No idea!!!
So anyway, everyone in the office is going to the funeral but me. It’s not the funeral so much, but, even though we work in a small office, I don’t feel particularly close to this co-worker. If it were me, and my husband or child died, as much as I enjoy my co-workers, it would not mean a whole lot to me for any of them to come, and I’d probably even prefer it if they didn’t. Quite honestly, I feel they don’t really know me OR my family. I’m not saying that’s a BAD thing, but I just feel private about it I guess.
This gets me thinking on the impending birth of my new baby this summer. Quite honestly, I don’t WANT my co-workers visiting me in the hospital. I will bring the baby to the office after we get settled in at home, but I feel my hospital stay is private and I don’t want anyone there besides family and very close friends. Think of it this way, if you don’t regularly keep company at my house, then I wouldn’t expect you to visit me in the hospital (weird rule, I know).
I know I probably should not think so much of myself as much as my co-worker and it’s better to err on the side of doing rather than avoiding. Wish I could figure myself out on this.
