Weird convalidation question

If two non-Catholics married, and later only one of them converted to Catholicism, but they found out they needed a convalidation because for whatever reason the Church did not consider their marriage valid, would the Catholic party need to obtain a dispensation for a mixed marriage, since they are now bound by Catholic marriage laws? (Hey, I told you it was weird )

Yes. Since one party is Catholic, and the other party is non-Catholic, they would need a dispensation/permission for a mixed marriage. If the other party is a baptised Christian, it’s not a “dispensation” it’s permission (c. 1124). If the non-Catholic is also not a baptised Christian, it’s a dispensation (c. 1086).
