Weird Mormon habit that I carried over into Catholicism - hacking my missal

I have one I specifically HIghlight, notes in margins. tabs, etc. Its a horror show:D I even had to glue the binding once already. I actually have to refrain from starting on a new one though, its tempting I admit. 😃

Then I happen to see Scott Hahns Bible on television. I can’t remember who was doing the show with him, but they picked up his Bible and showed the cameras before he realized what was going on. Scott was a bit embarassed. 😉

Its all good.

Peace
My Bible’s beat up, but not from taking copious notes in it. More from being jostled around in my backpack all day when I should have been reading a passage or two.

Most of the other abuse they’ve taken was accidental. Candle wax stains and water wrinkling when I accidentally spilled the appropriate fluids. ( I chipped off the candle wax, but it still leaves a mark.) One Bible lost its front cover from being carried around so much. Another, my grandparents’ Holy Trinity Edition with revised Psalms etc, just starting to come apart. (Such a beautiful and embellished Bible. It even has thumb indices built into it. :p) Another, my confirmation Bible, hasn’t lost its cover yet, but thanks to the poor lamination and my need to pick at anything that’s loose, it’s got a few gashes in the paper cover.

Hilarious!
Aren’t you suffering just a bit from scrupulosity? It’s the meaning that’s sacred, not the piece of paper! Ever consider getting an e-reader copy like Kindle? Then you can highlight and add notes and generally mess around with it ON THE SCREEN. The paper page will be out of the mix.so even your rampant scruples will remain unoffended!

Talk about the spirit (yes, lower case) and the letter!

I still have ll my LDS Scriptures (with my name embossed on them). They’re good for reference when discussing Mormonism with family members. I still feel culturally LDS in some ways. I have a lot of food storage, I give 10% and I love green jello with shredded carrots.

Haha. I’m a Nevermo convert to Catholicism from evangelical protestantism, but my uncle is Mormon and I have good friends who are Mormon. Do you say, “Oh My Hell,” when you drop a book on your foot? I love the Mormons I know personally, I just don’t ever want to be one. LOL

BTW I love the missal picture. I mark up my books too. I wish more people took their missals that seriously. It’s good.

:rotfl:

You win the best cultural reference to Mormonism I’ve seen in a long time! Bwahahah! My favorite Mormon food is “pink stuff” (that weird pink whipped cream/ cherries/ marshmallow/ pineapple concoction that always ended up next to the green jello with shredded carrots).

I still feel very culturally Mormon on a regular basis. Today at mass, for example, I was singing “Joy To The World” and I got to the point where it says, “Let every heart prepare him room … and saints and ang … er, nature sing, And heaven and nature sing!” Oops. 😊 I was so excited that I finally knew a hymn, and then I still blew it.

And I still don’t know what to do with an Advent wreath.

LOL!! no, really… that’s Mormon food?? (I always wondered who was responsible for that creation)

I love that stuff! :bounce:

As long as nothing is damaged, great idea. I’ve been thinking of doing the same for my Daily Missal using the ribbons then pasting some directional notes on the blank pages.

This weekend, as it was slow and I was in the mood to do a project, I decided to add tabs to my 1962 Roman Missal (Baronius Press) to easily reference all the major prayers in the Latin Mass. I took some Avery 5160 labels, built labels in MS Word with the names for the tabs and highlighted the cells, printed them out, cut them to fit, and then “laminated” the tabs with some clear Scotch tape. Here’s a picture of how the project turned out. As you can see, I’ve also done a few other hacks, like highlight the responses said during an EF High Mass, and put little notes where to stand, sit, and kneel (like you can find in the red missalette). I’ve also taken my missal to a Christian book store and had them emboss my name on the front in gold leaf.
I think you did a wonderful job. I wish I could do the same, but I would not doubt make a mess of it. 😛

And I still don’t know what to do with an Advent wreath.
Advent Wreaths sometimes come with a page that has prayers on it. Ours had one prayer for each week. Basically, it would go through a quote of the Bible, talk about it, and then ask God to help us see it, in most cases. It was very quick, and only lasted about two minutes at the most. I would recommend looking for one. After all, it is still Advent and will be for a very long time.

BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF INDUSTRY;

I realized, after thinking about things for a bit, that all of this hacking of my missal was a carryover habit from my LDS days. My quad always had my name embossed on it. And ever since my Seminary days in high school, I had a habit of highlighting and coloring and writing things all over my scriptures in an attempt to be the best Scripture Chaser around. For those Catholics who might be reading this thread - seriously, most LDS bookstores have a whole department dedicated to making sure you can turn your scriptures into a colorful, sticker-full reading rainbow. I do miss those thumb indexes on my scriptures though - I thought about trying to figure out how to do those, but gave up and went with the tabs instead.

I also keep a very detailed Prayer Journal in a Moleskine weekly calendar that I have, as well as a standard journal that is both spiritual and “here’s what’s going on in my life” in nature. That’s a very Mormon habit. When I told my priest about my prayer journal he said, “You won’t keep that up for very long.” Um, I’ve got journals going back to when I was 12 in my closet. I’m all about the journaling. I also rarely drink Coke. I’ll drink Dr. Pepper or tea, but for some reason “Coke” was always such a no-no for me growing up that even as a Catholic adult, I feel a bit guilty. I remember one of the first time I was talking to my priest and he asked if I wanted a cup of coffee and going, “Um … no, don’t drink coffee.” Even though I’ve been Catholic since 2006, I still find that sometimes these old Mormon habits die hard.

Do any of you ex-Mos out there have any odd habits that have carried over from your Mormon days? And have any of you done some customizing to your missal or bible to either personalize it, or to make it more user-friendly?
