Hello ladies (and gentlemen?)…

I’m new to CA, this is actually just my second post but have been pleasantly suprised to find so many military spouses here.

I’ve actually been with the Army my entire life. I was born into it in Germany, was active duty for about four years and am, again, a dependant. There was a period of about six months when I was in college, after I turned 23 before I got commissioned, where I was an actual civilian.

My husband and I have been married for six years and have two children. A boy who will be four in March and who has more energy then any one human being should be allowed to have and a daughter who is 2 1/2 and is a dirt playing Princess. 😃 My husband will hit 11 years in May. He too is an Army brat. Neither one of us has a clue what civilian life is all about. Those emails that go around, “You Know You’re an Army Family when…” describe us to a T, almost. Well, maybe perfectly. Hmmm…

We just returned from a nearly six year tour in Germany. We LOVED it there but were so ready to come back to the States. Travelling got harder and more expensive with the kids and that darn Euro rate. What is it these days? We miss that COLA though. A word of warning for those of you over there getting ready to PCS back to the States. Watch out. You forget how much it helps until you don’t have it anymore!

To those of you who homeschool? How do you do it? Mine aren’t quite there yet but I just don’t think I have the fortitude to do it. I have an aunt who was a Navy wife for 20 years and has eight kids. My uncle is retired now and their youngest who was born just before then, is as old as my youngest. Their oldest is 16. She homeschools all of them. I think she is a saint. I think I would lose my mind. I have both of mine going to the CDC three times a week for few hours so that I can get things done. How do you get things done? I tried doing a quick run through a the commissary today. I bought four things and they could barely handle that. Especially when your husband is deployed. How do you manage? Are your children angels? Do you have an abundance of patience or some secret? Right now I’m not planning on homeschooling because I know both the Catholic kindergarten and public kindergarten are pretty good programs here but I also know that we could and probably will end up somewhere, someday where the public system is seriously lacking and we won’t be able to afford private school. So, what are your secrets? More than anything, how do you stay sane? I love my children but I can’t handle them 24-7, they exhaust me physically and emotionally.

I look forward to hearing from all of you. I just heard noises from my DD’s room and my laundry is done so I’m off.

Have a great day!

Hi Everyone!

My husband has been in the AF for almost 15 years (we married the day after he was commisioned) and we are currently at McGuire AFB in NJ. He’s in school for just a year, so we’ll be moving in June. If only we knew where we’re going…

We have lived on base at Williams AFB in Mesa, AZ (before it closed), off base at Falcon AFB (now Schreiver) as there was no on-base housing available while we were there, in the TLFs at Reese AFB for a few months, on base at Pope AFB for almost three years, off base at Ramstein AB Germany, and off base at Little Rock AFB, AR before moving here. We’re on base here since it’s just for a year and we’re close to the school house and VERY far from civilization.

I don’t know how many of you could tell by the bases I listed, but he’s a C-130 guy too. He isn’t flying right now and I think he really misses it.

I have a 12-year old son and twin 3-year old boys too, and I have to say, I have my little guys in day care for a few hours a few days/week also. I have to make sure I use the time wisely! I can get so much more done this way, and the boys have more fun playing with their friends than shopping too. Everyone has different personalities, so don’t feel weird about needing some time or not being attracted to homeschooling! I tried homeschooling my (then) 10-yr old son last school year, but with the babies, it was nearly impossible to give my ‘student’ the attention he needed. It just wasn’t in the cards for us at the time. We used a great program (K12), but it just wasn’t for us. He’s currently at school on base, but I have to say I prefer the Catholic schools. They get to celebrate holidays and he is catechised so much better.

I know there are a ton of funny stories I could tell you about things that have happened during depoyments/TDYs etc if I could just remember them! I have no brain, and haven’t for some time. I wonder if it’s the twins, my age (36), or some other crazy thing going on with me. If it isn’t written down, it doesn’t exist in my life right now. Does anyone else have this ‘condition?’ 😛

Okay, I just re-read this and notice that I’m rambling… Time to let someone else do some talking. PBWU, great idea to get this thread going! Nice chatting with you! Thanks for the coffee–this is the first cup of coffee I have actually liked! 😃

We are at Dover AFB. We are also moving soon. I know all too well the wishing we knew where we will be going! We think it will be San Antonio, but don’t have orders yet.

My husband was a flying crew chief on C130 gunships at at Hurlburt Field when we were first married. He loved the mission and the plane. He is a Flight Engineer on C5 Galaxy now.

We have been homeschooling for the past 3 yrs, we have always loved it. I was in school to be an art teacher, and I enjoy the time with them etc… but it has been a real challenge this year because I have had some bad health problems. I am now tryign to get extra work done on Saturdays so that I can get as much schoolwork done as possible with the surgery coming up. We have decided to put them in school next year when we move. We have checked out the schools in San Antonio and have found one we like. We can’t afford the Catholic school here .

OH yes, yes yes. I have officially become the most forgetful person I know! I read a recent study which shows that multi tasking lowers a person’s IQ. 😉

What an awesome thread you have here!

I’m not a military wife, but my wife was for 17 years of my 20 years of Naval service. Hers was truly the toughtest job in the Navy.

I salute you ladies and thank you for steadfastness in supporting your husbands in their vocation of service to their country. You’ll never know how much peace of mind and comfort you bring to them knowing you are there at home for them. I’ve seen so many guys fall apart emotionally and become dead weight or self-destruct because their wives were running around. You are truly heroes.

Morning! Back in the day - we started out being stationed at Eglin AFB (Sarge was assigned there right after basic in 1958!). NEWay we rented an “efficiency” apartment for $80 per month (a buddy made the arrangement while Sarge was home on leave getting married! June 1960). Alas, it was too much money and we had to find something cheaper. We found a two bedroom frame house out at the “end” of Jet Drive - of course furnished - for $65. But it was too far out at the “end” and the jungle began in the backyard - I have been creeped out over snakes ever since! So we moved again!
Next we got a two bedroom duplex on Eglin Blvd in Cinco Bayou!
I started working at the base soon after we got down there so we could afford $90 a month! All was okay for awhile but the landlady lived in the other half of the duplex and sort of “helped herself” to my large cooking pot with lid (wedding present)! When I started fixing our supper I could not find the lid - it fit the frying pan also.
Lo and behold - there was my pot and lid on her stove - visible through the back kitchen door! I was “outraged” but being just 19yrs old we didn’t say anything - just moved! A cute little house down the road - $95! Good old Cinco Bayou! We went back and found both places a few years ago - Lawyers offices on Eglin Blvd and a hair stylist business in the little house.

Hurlburt Field was known as Field 9 back then and had a
par 3 golf course (no charge). Also - property was for sale going toward Field 9 - maybe $100 down and $15 p/mo for large lots. Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda!

My first daughter was born at Eglin AFB in 1997. It is amazing how much the area has grown up, especially in the Navaree, Gulf Breeze, Holly by the Sea area.

Hey Kids,

How’s it going? My husband has been gone this week and I’m eager for him to get home tonight. He’s leaving again in a week, but hey–he’ll be here for a little while!

Has anyone taken the test in the book “Five Love Languages?” I took it last night and discovered (confirmed, actually) that I am a very strong Acts of Service/Quality Time kind of gal. Kind of funny that I married a military guy (they tend to be gone a bunch, don’t they!?), huh! Anyone else find themselves in this situation?

I can’t wait til he gets home. I’ve printed it out for him to take too. I’m excited to find out his primary love language.

Have a great Presidents’ Weekend.

Hey there MilitaryWife91 🙂

I have taken the 5 Love Languages Test - and so did my husband. I thought it was so interesting because my husband and I were so different in the way we “felt” loved. I too am and Acts of Service/Quality Time person. He was Words of Affirmation and …hmmm… what was the other one? Oh well. We enjoy reminding eachother - “Hello - Acts of Service person here? What about the garbage :)?”.

Good news - my DH will be home in 12 days for R&R 👍 !

Okay everyone… let’s do another question…

How many different houses have you lived in in how many years of marriage?

We’ve been married for 10 years, and have lived in 10 houses 🙂 Four moves in one year one time (I moved overseas to be with him where he was already stationed, then off-post, then on-post, then that on-post place was renovated moving us again).

Well, PAWife, you have me beat! We’ve lived in 10 houses in 15 years. Some were apartments while waiting for base housing, etc. This is the first time in 11 years we haven’t moved during an assignment, but that’s only because we’re only here for a year! 😛 Who knows what would happen if we had a few more months…

Hey there, PAWife!

Glad to hear your hubby will be home to visit soon. THAT will be nice!

I just wanted to tell you that coincidentally, my husband took the Love Languages Test and he’s a strong “Words of Affirmation” guy too. “Touch” is also a strong language for him. Like you, we will definitely be reminding each other of our ‘strengths’. 😛

I’m going to ask around to see if this “Words of Affirmation” thing might be big among military guys…

Take care,
Tricia

We’ve been married 8 years and 7 homes. That’s just homes that we BOTH have occupied… .if you take the times that he was at OBC and I was stationed in Germany, then add another. Then there is this current deployment and I’m here. 😛 We’ve packed up our house twice in one calendar year last year. That’s the second time we’ve done something like that but it was “worse” this time as our family has grown significantly since the last time we did that.

It will be 11 yrs in April and we have lived in four houses, but each one was full of bad luck (if you believe in luck) We either had landlords who raised rent by $100 per month when our lease ran out and we had to wait three months past the lease for our house to be built, then kept our full deposit for no good reason, or the house 1 yr on the market with a net loss of $15,000, the base house that fits the criteria for the trailor park stereotype, and now the base house that is suddenly being torn down two yrs. earlier than planned. so we have to move soon!

So only 4 houses in 10 yrs.but it has been far too stressful nonetheless.

I hope the next place will be better!

Fourteen homes in 21 years! We are in our 15th and last home - the one we dreamed of when we were highschool sweethearts - we built this one on the lake and have 11 grandchildren to play with!

That sounds like the house my husband and I have dreamed of since we were highschool sweethearts, complete with the lake! Wow, I’m so glad you made it to your dream home! ( I can only hope that we also have grandchildren, you are so blessed!)

Hmm… I have three so if each one had 4 children we could have dozen grandkids… what a nice thought! I have never pondered the number of grandkids before, but is something nice to look forward to!😃

HI fellow wives!

Today I have popcorn and diet coke. Please, have some if you want! It’s snacktime with the kids! I just wanted to tell you all goodbye for lent!

It is going to be very difficult, but I decided last week to give up Catholic Answers for Lent. I usually hang out here after I teach a lesson and while my children are doing the school work they dont’ need help with. If I leave the room they start goofing off and playing, so this is what i do to pass the time, that way I am also here if they need any help! I used to try to read but it was far too frustrating to have to stop in the middle of a book to help with a math problem!

If you are at Dover AFB, stop on by for some meatless meals on Fridays, or some coffee and doughnuts on Sundays!

I hope you keep this tread going while I am gone, if not it will be resurrected at Easter. (how symbolic)

God Bless you all and I pray we all have a spiritually fruitful Lent!

 Melissa

hahah… I can’t give this place up… than again, I have a wireless laptop… so it doesn’t matter where I go.

I gave up Mt. Dew :crying:
I’m adding daily Mass at LEAST once a week.
I’m giving up the HOURS spent each night on the computer… unless I’m on IM with DH.

My kids gave up TV and my oldest adopted having to read two books a day (she’s learning).

I’ll be around during Lent. I gave up smoking (three weeks ago) thats a biggie for me plus caring for my Mom who is going to be 93 and is chair to bed to bathroom bound with Alzheimer’s. This winter has been lonnnnnggg! We got about a foot of snow overnight! DH is out with the snowblower AND its still coming down alot! I have learned to knit this winter - made several scarves using bulky yarn and the “fun fir” yarn combined - turned out pretty good. Now I’m trying to make a pull on hat using four double pointed kneedles in the “round”. Wanna see something funny? Watch my thumbs try to pull this off! Anyone knit or have some other hobby?
