Do those who believe in salvation by faith alone expect to hear these words?
I suspect God is no respecter of our expectations.
"He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? “So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.’”
(Luke 17:9-10 NASB)
What if you didn’t do what you ought to have done?I hope hear that but I also expect to say in accordance with Luke 17.
That is for God to decide who knows my heart and actions better than me. I do know that I do not do everything that I ought to and I don’t believe that anyone does. I do hope that when I do things it is not for the purposes of being saved or earning a reward. I hope I am doing them because I love God and doing what He wants is pleasing to Him.What if you didn’t do what you ought to have done?
Will you be saved?
Doing good works because it is necessary for salvation does not imply that they are done for selfish reasons. Good works are done for the Glory of God. How is that wrong? That is for God to decide who knows my heart and actions better than me. I do know that I do not do everything that I ought to and I don’t believe that anyone does. I do hope that when I do things it is not for the purposes of being saved or earning a reward. I hope I am doing them because I love God and doing what He wants is pleasing to Him.
Saying I am doing good works because I want to be saved puts me at the center of the picture. I am doing things because I want something as a result, which I believe is the wrong reason for doing them
I don’t necessarily agree. Desiring eternity with God is not a bad thing according to Paul:That is for God to decide who knows my heart and actions better than me. I do know that I do not do everything that I ought to and I don’t believe that anyone does. I do hope that when I do things it is not for the purposes of being saved or earning a reward. I hope I am doing them because I love God and doing what He wants is pleasing to Him.
Romans 2
6God "will give to each person according to what he has done."7To those who by persistence in doing good** seek glory, honor and immortality**, he will give eternal life. 8But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
Phil 3
10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.
“For I know whom I have believed, that he is able to keep what I have committed to him against that day.”Do those who believe in salvation by faith alone expect to hear these words?
How about we look at the definition of the word “ought”.I hope hear that but I also expect to say in accordance with Luke 17.
But if we look at the entirety of Christ’s statement we see that we should not expect thanks for doing what we ought. Expecting salvation as a result seems to expecting a lot more than thanks. How about we look at the definition of the word “ought”.
Ought - used to express duty or moral obligation.
That seems necessary to me.
It’s not about expecting anything. It’s about doing good works because that is what God commanded in hope of salvation. Jesus came to give us hope. But if we look at the entirety of Christ’s statement we see that we should not expect thanks for doing what we ought. Expecting salvation as a result seems to expecting a lot more than thanks.
I didn’t avoid the question - it would be the height of heresy and apostacy to try and answer it; as if we are to “expect” anything from God! Our grace is undeserved yet unmerited. We shouldn’t expect, much less deserve anything from God; we are not even worthy to gather the crumbs under His table.
Why bother answering if you are just going to avoid the question?
Are you striving for holiness?I didn’t avoid the question - it would be the height of heresy and apostacy to try and answer it; as if we are to “expect” anything from God! O+
Those first two questions are very strangely similar to the words I was asked at my ordination examinations. Are you striving for holiness?
Do you have confidence in the grace of God?
Are you being a faithful and productive servant?
You are avoiding the point, as you know. Those first two questions are very strangely similar to the words I was asked at my ordination examinations.
However, those questions are much, much different than the one you asked. As far as being faithful and productive? I think I am. However, God probably doesn’t respect my thoughts on the matter, or anyone else’s.
Probably not.You are avoiding the point, as you know.
Let me rephrase it to keep from straying.
If you willfully neglect God’s commands, will you go to heaven?
I never said that either are irrelevant. Indeed, works of piety and mercy are a very essential part of our journey of salvation - faith without works is dead. But this is not how you phrased your original post nor your follow up post.If not, then how can you say that obedience and works are irrelevant?
I agree completely.Indeed, works of piety and mercy are a very essential part of our journey of salvation - faith without works is dead. O+
Yes.Do those who believe in salvation by faith alone expect to hear these words?
