It’s hard to know what the truth is. You’re right perhaps I exaggerated. But I hope you understand that I was deceived for 25 years thinking that tanks rolled into the square. When I visited the square some years later I was told again quietly that the tanks destroyed three sides of the steps of the memorial but left one intact so the students could escape. And that subsequently students were massacred in the square. Supposedly Deng ordered the killing of the students. I went there almost like a pilgrimage to remember those who fought for supposedly democratic rights. How wrong I was!!! Imagine when I found out the alternative version - it does feel like one big lie. It was propaganda to put China in a negative light. I know people will say what’s the difference between killing in the square and killing elsewhere, but the main point is why did these people perpetuate this myth. Their credibility is totally lost on me. If you google most of the reports still say tanks rolled into the square. Does no one care about the truth?

I believe this is what happened. Some are based on good evidence some from logical deductions.

The students were protesting. The government wanted to negotiate with the students and this went on for a while. (In fact this shows it was more tolerant than even the occupy central movement in Hong Kong) initially everything was peaceful. But when the students could not get what they want and also their occupation of the square dragged on the students and protesters (let’s not forget most who caused trouble are probably not the students) became unruly and at times violent. Deng ordered curfew and military clearing of the square to restore order. The military moved in to clear the square peacefully. The protesters left chanting happily(this is captured on video). Elsewhere there were skirmishes between the protesters and the army. In one particular horrible place well away from the square the protesters have killed a soldier and burnt his corpse then dressed the body up mockingly. (Photo available) this proved too much for his fellow soldiers on the ground and they used heavy tactics in response and as a result civilians were killed. The next day as the tanks try to leave one person who is not brave but simply have no respect for law and order try to stand in the tanks way. Also the student leaders found out how the military killed civilians and used it for their political gain and gave us the the infamous interview that I saw, detailing describing how the army moved into the square to kill students. What a liar!! Years Later he admitted he lied. Meanwhile Lee Kuan Yew said to Deng he had to do what he had to do but had a massive PR disaster to deal with. And it was and still is…even to this day in this forum.

Anyway that’s all I’m going to say. So let’s not derail this thread further. Not going to start another thread because of this. The truth will come out eventually and people who are really interested will do their own research anyway.
