The Eastern Church teaches that deification is the ultimate goal for every Christian. So in that sense saying that “Mary is God” is quite accurate, as are we all (or will be)…mystically. Indeed it was Jesus’ fervent prayer that we be one with Him as He is one with the Father. (John 17) However, the folks at the Mary-is-God website seem to have taken that thinking and turned HARD into left field. It wouldn’t surprise me if it really is a site put up by anti-Catholics to fuel that sentiment in others.

Never in any of my studies have I heard this- that the church teaches we should seek deification. Sounds heretical to me and much like Mormon theology. I cant help to be but very suspect of this claim!

Little Mary:
If I knew how to report this to the Catholic League I would.
If you check out their website then you should be able to find a way to let them know what is going on. They probably already know about it anyway.

Fatima fervor driven to the extreme. Not any less insane than Pius XIII. All you need to start a new church is a webmaster.
If you are refering to the claim that he was “Hitler’s Pope” then you need to do more research. Check out the CA’s page and look in the archived shows from the radio. They had a show dedicated to the whole “Hitler’s Pope” issue.

Can you believe that there is a catholic momement which considers mary as god!

Unbelievable!

I was raised protestant and so I’ve seen some werid things. We just have to continue to pray for these people and hope that the Holy Spirit sill lead them in the right direction. We also need to evangelize to them as well.

Anyone who thinks this can’t call himself a Catholic. You either follow all the Catholic teaching, or you don’t.

Check that Roman numeral: Pius XIII

Ditto from me… That sounds like Mormon thinking–pure and simple. What are your sources for a claim such as this, frnate?

I began reading a book called “The Orthodox Way” by Bishop Kaalistos Ware, and in it it said this about deification of man:

“By virtue of this distinction between the dicine essence and the divine energies, we are able to affirm the possibility of a direct or mystical union between man and God ---- what the Greek Fathers term the theosis of man, his “deification”-----but at the same time we exclude any pantheistic identification between the two: for man participates in the energies of God, not in the essence. THere is union, but not fusion or confusion. Although “oned” with the divine, man still remains man; he is not swallowed up or annihilated, but between him and God there continues always to exist an “I----Thou” relationship of person to person.”

I think what the original poster who cited Eastern Orthodox believing in man becoming a God, is maybe having trouble with the context and the use of the term theosis of man. Eastern Orthodox Christians do not believe in becoming Gods, but becoming united with God, and of course eternal life like the rest of us do.

You would be better pressed going over to an Eastern Orthodox board and getting an explanation.

Here we go again. It doesn’t matter how many times the Church proclaims the faith and teaches the faith some one somewhere will pop up and invent their own heresy. Putting it bluntly - if it isn’t the teaching of God’s catholic Church then its heresy.

What we must make sure is that no Protestant hears about this and thinks that this is what Catholics believe.

Once there was a visiting priest who touched upon this concept in his sermon, and it surprised me to hear it. I had not heard it spoken of before that.

This man is a very, very serious and orthodox priest who is a professor of something-or-other in a seminary in Rome, and is not the type to introduce novelties!

Folks,

We need to be VERY careful in this territory. There is something in the teachings of the Catholic Church on the subject (Jesus mentioned it in John 10:34-35, and was quoting from the Psalms). But you are right, the subject is extremely easy to distort and will provide infinite amounts of ammunition for anti-Catholics if we are not completely clear about what we mean and what we don’t mean.

Yes, and at Lateran IV, the Council defended Peter Lombard against unjust accusations from Abbot Joachim that supposedly he was teaching a quaternity, that the “essence of God” was a 4th Person.

The Bishops at the Council stated that the Catholic Faith teaches that any one of the 3 Persons of the Trinity “is the reality, namely the substance, essence, or divine nature.” And Mary is not one of the 3 Persons of the Trinity, right?

That’s in my edition of Denzinger, paragraph 431 and 432.

Of course, it could develop into something else regarding Mary… but my argument would be that such would be against prior Magesterium teachin, that Mary is a created being, and God is in NO WAY a created being.

And also, Marian Dogmas and doctrines have developed in part along with Marian devotion. Check up on your Spirituality and Marian devotion… anything in there to hint at maybe Mary being the essence of God?

Yeah, she had perfect love, God is love, but that’s totally different. She was full of sanctifying grace, which is in a way our taking part in the divine nature here on earth.

Thanks Mike.

I was actually thinking of +Kallistos’ teachings (I’m a HUGE fan) as well as the notes and articles in the “Orthodox Study Bible” when I wrote my comment. I suppose I was trying to be too succinct and it got lost in translation.
