Were Adam and Eve real people?

Hello - I have a question about Adam and Eve. There is some definite inconsistencies in how this subject is being taught in our religious education classes. Last year, my students were taught that they were just stories. In previous years, they were taught that Adam and Eve were indeed real people.

I want to give them the most orthodox, solid, Catholic teaching on the matter.

The Church does teach that Adam and Eve are our first parents and were real people. I would suggest looking up Adam and Eve in the Catechism and here in the original Catholic Encyclopedia:
