Were Apollos and Barnabas apostles?

In other words, were they “bishops”? Perhaps. We see much with which we are familiar in the Church today taking shape in Scriptures.

No, in the early church, bishops, or “overseers”, were appointed by the Apostles, but were not considered to be Apostles. Apostles were messengers of the Gospel who’s purpose was to establish the Kingdom of God (build churches) and they were marked by signs, wonders and miracles. Bishops were pastors over the churches, assisted by deacons. And later, priests were added to help bishops who couldn’t keep up with personally administering the Eucharist, and teaching, etc.

In response to the original question, both Apollos and Barnabas had an apostolic-type ministry, and teamed with the Apostle Paul in his apostolic missions, so it’s been argued that they were, in fact, Apostles; however, that’s a debated point. Many people think that Apollos was the author of the New Testament letter to the Hebrews.
