Were classical musical Masses meant for the liturgy?

In one of my local parishes they play Mozart’s Requiem on the Day of the Dead (Nov. 2) together with the Mass. It consists of a small orchestra, choir and soloists performing from the organ loft. Although the mass lasts about an hour and a half it’s both unique (especially by today’s standards) and beautiful. I always look forward to it each year.
