Were Mary and Joseph Married when Mary gave birth to Jesus?

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, 7 but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.

Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, 8 yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Matthew 1:19

that’s one example.

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21"She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
22Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23"BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”
24And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, - Matt 1:18-24
How’s that?

My question for you is: If you’re really so “rational”, why don’t you just open the bible and read it for yourself?

According to your “proof” Mary was found with child through the holy Spirit…before they (Mary and Joseph) lived together,…"

Is this a proof of Joseph being MARRIED to Mary? If they were indeed MARRIED then why Joesph did not live with Mary or Mary did not live with Joseph or why they did not live together before Mary was found with child through the holy Spirit?

How did Mary convince others that Jesus’ birth was not due to Joseph coming into her? How did she prove she was a mother yet a virgin?

If you qoute:

23And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, Luke 3

Then why the words (as was supposed) are in brackets in the Bible, if Joseph was indeed married to Mary? Who were supposing Jesus was the son of Joesph? People or the one who inspired Luke or ?

Rational:
Christian teaching is quite clear on this point.
Joseph was the husband of Mary but not the father of Jesus.
Jesus was begotten directly by God without interfering with the virginity of Mary.

Mary became pregnant with Jesus before she began to live with Joseph. Joseph was disturbed by this, which proves he was not the father of the child. The message of the angel reassured him, and he took Mary to wife.
Thus, Joseph and Mary were indeed married.
How did Mary convince others? What does it matter how, or even if, she convinced others? If Jesus is the son of God, then gossip by Mary’s neighbours will not change that fact.

The phrase “as was supposed” refers to the belief that Jesus was the son of Joseph, not to the belief that Joseph was the husband of Mary. In fact the reason people supposed that Jesus was the son of Joseph, is that they knew Joseph was the husband of Mary.

Thanks for the heads up. BTW… How do you know this? Through pattern of the posts? Will you teach me to figure it out? Every now and then our friend comes up with a new name so I never get to know its him/her until you guys say so.

Back to the topic at hand, I really don’t get what’s the big deal about the question. Can’t a partnership of one being a wife and another being a husband be proof of marriage? What does he/she want? That the Bible specifically indicate that they were married by a rabbi at a specific place at a specific time?

Well not every bit of our Savior’s life was recorded in the Bible. But that doesn’t mean he was not a child. I think the same thing applies here too.

Yeah, basically through the pattern of their posts, and sometimes other minor little “red flags”. I’m not sure whether that last person was actually freedomm/justice2006/whateverElse, but it was pretty obvious that they were a Muslim in any case - not to mention a troll… :banghead:

In fact there is no proof in the Bible that Mary and Joseph were married when Mary gave birth to Jesus.
The first chapter of Matthew is quite clear on the fact of Mary and Joseph being married. Anyone who says otherwise completely fails to understand ancient Jewish marriage in which one’s “betrothed” was already recognized to be one’s legal wife. After the betrothal ceremony, all that remained was for the groom to return to his home, prepare a place for his new wife to live with him (usually a new house alongside that of his parents), and then go get his bride, who was already considered to be his. There was no exchange of vows on the wedding day itself.*Rather, there was just a party prior to the happy couple’s departure for the groom’s house. If anyone has a problem with this in regard to Mary, they need only look at Scripture itself: Matthew 1:18 says that Mary was “betrothed” to Joseph, yet, the very next verse (v. 19) calls Joseph her “husband.” Verse 19 also says that Joseph was planning to divorce her; and in the next verse (v. 20), the angel calls Mary Joseph’s “wife.” Thus, if they were not married how could 1) Joseph be her “husband”?, how could 2) Mary be his “wife”?, and how could 3) Joseph “divorce” her?

Did Mary try to convince anyone ? the Angel in Josephs dream did the convincing for him.

God had already revealed to many by the power of the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth Her cousin being one…

1:43 **And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? **

Luke 1:31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.** 33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34** And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?** 35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. **

From the above you can see that God is the Father of Jesus, Son of God, not the son of Joseph, … it’s not rocket science.

If Joseph was Mary’s husband and righteous man then why he was feeling trouble to expose Mary to shame when she was her wife and he was her husband? Why he decided to divorce her quietly?

If you are married to a girl legally accroding to Jewish custom and then if she gives birth to your baby after you are married, would you like to diverce her quietly simply because she gave birth to your child?

Was Joseph really married to her or betrothed up until Jesus’ birth?

You asked if Joseph was married to Mary when Jesus was born. You yourself have quoted scripture where it says when Joseph found out she was Pregnant he was going to divorce her. If they werent married why woud he have to divoprce her.

I dont think there is any record of Mary running around trying to convince anyone (except Joseph) thaty she was a Virgin. Why would it matter?
