Were Matthew and Levi one and the same and if so

In the Gospel of Mark (RSV), chapter 2 verses 13-17, we see the call of Levi. It states that Levi is the son of Alphaeus. I have always been told that Levi and Matthew are one and the same. The author never states this though. Now, if Levi and Matthew are the same then in Mark 3:13-19, where Jesus calls the twelve, it states that James (the lesser) is the son of Alphaeus. So, if Matthew and Levi are the same, are Matthew and James brothers? It never states that. The author never states Levi and Matthew are the same and it never states James and Matthew or Levi are brothers. This son of Alphaeus has me confused. Any enlightenment on this issue?
